POPULAR SPORTS ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the above was held at 4 p.m. yesterday. Present—The Mayor (in the chair), Messrs D. Keese, G . Turner, H. E. Alport, Samuels, Drowett, Gapes, G. Turner, Walkden, Haskins (hon. sec.), S. Clarkson. Mitchell, Crooks, and Hobbs. A memorandum was read from Mr P. Back, stating that single fare tickets issued on the 14th, 15th, and 16th instants, at stations within the Provincial District of Canterbury, would be available for return up to the 19th.' A letter was read from Mr T. Searell, tendering his resignation as a member of the committee, owing to his taking part in the bicycle races. The resignation was accepted. The secretary pointed out that, the bicycle races had been closed inadvertently to the public, by making them only open to members of clubs. There were a number of bicyclists who were not members of any club. Mr D. Keese called attention to the fact that several members of bicycle clubs had formed themselves into a club connected with the Koyal Bicycle Club of England, and reserved to themselves the right of blackballing anyone they did not fool was good enough to associate with them. Now, this was a sort of thing which the Popular Sports Association could never go in for. [Hear, hear.] This royal club had made a rule that if a member won a race in which the second man took money the member could not take his prize. Mr Haskins moved —“ That the bicycle races be open to all comers, the winners of any race to be enabled to take trophies or money at his option.” Mr Reese seconded the motion. After some discussion the motion was put and carried unanimously. The arrangements for the supervision of the gates at the Park were completed. Messrs Crooks, Turner and Drewett were appointed as a committee to purchase toys for children.

The admission of vehicles by the Park bridge was restricted to noon, and vehicles were prohibited from remaining on the Park. After some further matters of detail had been arranged the committee adjourned.
