CRICKET.

AUCKLAND v CHEISTCHUECH

The conclusion of Saturday’s play, after wo went to press, runs as follows : Arneil was the next man. Robinson made 1 off Frith and hit Fuller for 2 and 1, and 30 appeared on the board. Robinson made 1 off Frith and 4 off Fuller to square leg. Robinson hit one to the on, which went through a field’s hands, and Arneil then hit Fuller for 3 again to square leg, in which direction the want of more than one field was being severely felt. Frith then bowled a maiden. Barnes now took Fuller’s place with the ball, and Robinson put his third ball away for a single. The play now became slow, singles only appearing, but it was varied by a fine piece of fielding by Ollivier. At last Robinson hit Barnes for 4 through the boundary, but the ball of the over clean bowled him. His innings of 24 was a fine performaco, without a chance —51—2 —24. Blair was the next to appear at the wickets. Both bowling and batting wore were now very steady, a two for Arneil only varying the monotony of singles. Barton made 2 off Barnes to leg. Arneil drove Frith for 4 to the on—CO up on the board. The next over of Frith’s Arneil put a ball back into the bowler’s hand —C3—3 —l4. Arnoil’s innings comprised one 4, a 3, and singles, and was a painstaking performance. Testro was the next man. Blair put a lofty 3 to square leg off Barnes. Blair now cut Barnes to cover for 3, the ball being muffed in the field, and drove Frith for 3. Testro hit up Barnes to square leg, and the ball was prettily secured by Frith—74—4—o. Yates, the next man, cut Frith well for 2. Blair drove Barnes for 4 to the off, and for 3 to, leg, but next over was bowled by Frith —

83 —5—21. His innings comprised a 4, four 3’s, and a2. O’Brien now appeared. Yates hit Barnes for 2, and Hartland saved two or three by a smart piece of fielding. Slow play followed until O’Brien hit Frith to log for 3. Wilding now relieved Barnes with the ball, and his second ball O’Brien skyed to mid-on, and it was engulphed by Ashby—9o—6—4. Gardner was the next man, and Yates made a single to the off, while Wilding stopped a very hard hit to point in a manner that drew a cheer from the spectators. Time was now called.

This Day. The very unpropitious state of the weather rendered the lovers of the noble game somewhat anxious this morning. However, there was no downpour, and the drizzling rain was not enough to stop proceedings. Although a pleasanter cricketing day might well have been imagined, yet it was on the whole a more unpleasanter day for the spectators than the player. T ates and Gardner, the two not outs of the previous day, went to the wickets, and the Canterbury men out into the field at twenty minutes to one. Frith bowling from the north and Fuller from the south end. Frith’s first ball Yates hit for 4to the on. Fuller’s second Gardner lifted for 3 high to the on, and Yates snicked his last for 4 to the boundary. Frith’s first Gardner hit a hard 1. Gardner hit Fuller for 4to leg. Yates cut Frith for 2, cut the next ball over cover-point’s head for 4, and made 1 off the next. Yates drew Fuller for 1, and hit him for 3to the on. Gardner hit Frith for 3 to log. 120 now appeared on the board. Yates hit Frith hard for 3, and the batsmen appeared to be well set, and determined to make it lively for the bowlers. At this stage Ashby took the ball from Fuller, and Ollivier, who had strained his leg in fielding at long leg, was relieved by a substitute. Yates now snicked Ashby for 4, the ball just escaping slip. Ho also snicked the same bowler to leg, ran 1, and Gardner attempted a second run, but turned back andjsliped in the middle of the ground and was stumped—--128—7—14. Dufaur now appeared at the wickets. The first ball of Frith’s next over Yates hit into cover point’s hand—--123 —B—2B. Lankham was the next man. Dufaur broke ground with a single off Frith. A bye eventuated from Ashby’s next over, and two singles from the next. 130 appeared up. After a few singles, Dufaur was bowled off his pads by Frith — 13G—9 —3. Gill, the last man, now went in. Lankham made 2 off Ashby, and put him prettily away to the on for 3. He also made 2 off Frith, the ball being muffed in the field, afid a single. H* then snicked Ashby for 4 to leg. Barnes now relieved Ashby. Gill broke the ice by a hard hit which was stopped, and a single obtained. After a couple more singles, 150 appeared on the board. Slow play ensued till Lankham hit Barnes prettily for 4 to leg, snicked him for 2 in the slips, and again hit him to leg for 4. The two last men were evidently determined to make the most of the situation. But Wilding, who had on Saturday successfully succeeded in breaking up a knot, was put on, and off his very first ball, a bumpy one, Lankham was caught off his wrist in the slips. The innings thus closed for 102, 32 ahead of the Canterbury men. The Aucklanders the whole of the morning had been batting very freely and well, and their tail certainly proved to be by no means a weak one.

The Auckland score stands as under ;
