About midnight on Saturday a fire broke out in Captain Good’s house at Oeo, the furniture, clothing, and nearly everything belonging to the family being destroyed. The place was insured, but the loss is heavy, a new addition to the house ]ust being built, which was also partly destroyed

NAPIER, December 4. Immense dissatisfaction exists with respect to the apparent efforts of the Government to evade its declared policy in the matter of hospital maintenance. The Government say they will give pound for pound at the end of the financial year. Ihe hospital committee had collected .£ISOO, and during the past six months disbursed that amount in maintenance. They now demand payment to enable them to expend it on the erection of additional wards. Government objects to do this, and requires the com mittee to raise half for maintenance and building fund. Under these circumstances the public decline to subscribe for anything but building purposes. In most of the churches in town and country collections were made for the hospital yesterday, but most meagre offertories were obtained. The Wesleyans declined to give the hospital any service, and the English Church in Napier deferred consideration of the proposal. WELLINGTON, December 4. Intelligence has been received by Messrs A. Moore and Co., of Christchurch, that the barque Selim, chartered and loaded by them in Lyttelton with 978 bags of wheat for Falmouth for orders, has foundered on the voyage between Falmouth and Dunkirk. She arrived at Falmouth on the 23rd, and was ordered to Dunkirk. Her cargo is insured in the South British. DUNEDIN, December 4.
