NEW ZEALAND.

[per press association.] AUCKLAND, December 2,

In the Auckland papers Slade, the wrestler, challenges any man in the colony to a wrestling match for J.‘200 a side. 0 AMARU, December 2. The indefinite nature of the Order in Council in making new volunteer regulations has led to a difficulty here. On Thursday the artillery and rifies fire for a cup given by Mr Shrimski, M.H.R., and Captain Creagh, of the artillery, has given written notice to Captain Headland that he objects to bandsmen of rifies firing in the team, holding that the new regulations are now in force, and that under them the band becomes a garrison baud. Captain Creagh is a lawyer, and threatens to persist in Iris objection, and as Captain Headland is equally persistent, complications are likely to arise unless the point is put beyond dispute. DUNEDIN, December 2. At a quarter to two o’clock this morning a fire broke out at Milton pottery. By three the greater pai-t of the works wore destroyed. The fire apparently broke out in the packing room. Had a few men been at hand nearly all might have been saved, but before assistance arrived the flames had complete mastery. For some time the houses in the vicinity were in peril. Had ther been any wind all must have been destroyed. The only buildings saved were the kilns and a brick building containing the wheels and the printing room. Recently much valuable machinery has been erected, and •nly the day before additional expensive works were completed. An immense amount of finished ware in stock was destroyed by the fire. It is a bad thing for Milton, as forty hands are thrown out of employment. Incendiarism is suspected. Thu stock is insured for A 1525 with the National, part of which is reinsured in the Now Zealand United and Victoria.

A fire occurred on the sailmaking promises of Messrs Thompson and Owen, in Castle street, last night. The premises are insured in the Hamburg Company for £ 2OO .
