ST. LUKE’S CONCERT.
The concert at St. Luke’s last evening was in every sense of the word, a successful one, alike as regards attendance and the excellent programme submitted. Mrs Swindell contributed two numbers, “ The Blind Girl to her Harp" and “Home they brought her warrior dead.” The first of these was sung with, considerable expression, the staccato passages being prominently brought out. The second song was expressively rendered, the pathetic tenderness which should -be wedded to the words being very marked, the result being an unanimous encore, to which the response was a repetition of the last verse. Mrs Townend was in excellent voice. Her first song, “ Euby,” was received with every demonstration of favor, the full rich tones of this lady’s voice finding ample scope in this number. An encore was the result, which was answered by the song “ Say I will be thine.” Prolonged applause followed, but no response ensued. Mr E. A. Joseph sang two songs, viz., “When the quiet moon is beaming ” and “ The Midshipmite.” For the latter, which is a. departure from his usual style, Mr Josephs was compelled to respond by repeating the last verse. The Eev. E. A. Lingard sang- “ The Vagabond” with much expression. The Eev. T. Plavell gave “ I heard a. voice” in his well-known style, but his best effort was in a duct with Mr Miller, “ A voice from the waves.” The latter gentleman sang with good taste. Mr Juncker gave two pianoforte solos, and also accompanied the various performers. A series of dissolving views were shown byMr T. Crook, the first part being from New Zealand to London. The first view shown, was St. Luke’s Church. Canterbury College the Museum, the Boys’ High School, the Cathedral, post-office and other Christchurch views, the port and harbor of Lyttelton, Aden, the Great Pyramid and the Sphynx, the Suez Canal, a ferry at Port Said, Lord Wolseley, Arabi Pasha, the port of Valetta, Gibraltar, Land’s End with St. Michael’s Mount, Ventnor, Isle of Wight, Eochester Cathedral, three views of Greenwich Hospital, the Custom House, London ; the pool and London Bridge. The second part was intended to be illustrative of “ From* London to Windsor,” but as the gas was expended only two views were shown, viz., the Houses of Parliament and. Windsor Castle.
