CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, November 29. [Before 0. Whitefoord, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness. —May Mitchell was lined 10s. For a first offence a man was fined ss.
Stealing a Swag. —Jacob Shields was charged with stealing a swag, valued at £2, the property of Wm. Baker. The evidence showed that on the night of November 25th he went into the Cheltenham Boarding-house, where he had previously lodged, and took out a swag. The swag had not been found, and Mr Joyce, who appeared for accused, suggested that he had merely removed his own property. The Bench gave the accused the benefit of the doubt, and dismissed the case. Intending to Desert a Wife. —Michael Murphy was brought up charged with intending to desert his wife Isabella and her four children. Mr McConnel appeared for accused, and as the arrest had only just been made, he obtained a remand till Friday next. Bail was allowed, accused in £SO and one surety in .£SO. Abatement op a Nuisance. —Henry Patten was charged with allowing a nuisance to exist by draining house slops into a side channel. The case had been adjourned from a previous day. Mr Hobbs, inspector of nuisances, now reported that the cause of complaint had been removed. Defendant, consequently, fined in the nominal sum of one shilling and costs. Burnham School Children. —Elizabeth Horne, in arrears with her payments for the maintenance of her child, having paid an instalment, the case was adjourned for a week to give her an opportunity to arrange for the balance.
