CANTERBURY COLLEGE

A meeting of the Board of Governors of the above institution was held at 3 pan. yesterday. Present—Mr W. Montgomery (chairman), the Primate, Eev. C. Fraser, Hon. E. C. J. Stevens, Dr. Coward, Messrs Veel, Lance, Inglis, Pereday, Tancred, Malet, Webb, Wakefield, Maude.

The Chairman said that since the last meeting of the Board Miss Grossman and. Miss Pike had been appointed as assistant mistresses at the Girls’ High school, and their duties would commence next term. Tenders would be invited for lighting the School of Art on the upper floor. Arrangements had been made for the engagement of a teacher of swimming at the Boys’ High school. Tenders would also be called for the drill shed at the Boys’ High school. The next meeting of the Board falling on Christmas Day, there could be nomeeting on that day, but no doubt a special meeting could be called if required. The next ordinary meeting of the Board after this would fall on January 30th, when the estimates for the year would be laid before the Board. The breaking up of the Girls’ High School would take place on December 18th, and that of the Boys’ High School on December 20th. The first subject to be considered by the Board would be the report of the college committee, and as there would probably be a number of questions to be asked and answered on the matters raised in the report, ho would suggest that the Board go into committee on the subject. Mr Malet moved—" That the Board go into committee for the consideration of the report of the college committee.” The Primate seconded the motion, which, was agreed to. The Board went into committee on the report, and ultimately passed it in the following shape ; —“ The committee does not recommend the Board to adopt and give effect to the resolution passed by the Professorial Council on the Sth November. The committee recommends the Board to increase the salary of the Professor of Biology to A GOO per annum.” The report of the estates committee was considered and adopted. The Board resumed, when the chairman reported what had been done in committee, which was confirmed.

Mr Malet moved —“ That the College committee be authorised to confer with the Canterbury Law Society as to an annual contribution by the society towards the support of a lectureship of jurisprudence, and in the event of such being to a sufficient amount, the committee may take steps to fill the appointment. That failing any arrangement with the Canterbury LawSociety, the College committee be authorised to make arrangements for a lectureship in jurisprudence.” Mr Wakefield seconded the motion, which, was carried. The Board then adjourned.
