RIFLE MATCH.

A match was fired on Saturday between eleven men of the E Battery of Artillery and eleven men of the Kowai Rifle Club, on the range of the latter, at Sefton. The weather was all that could be desired. There was very little sun, with a light south-west breeze, consequently, as will be seen by the subjoined, good scoring was the order of the day. The Artillery were most hospitably entertained by the members of the Kowai Club, who had studied everything that could be conducive to the the comfort of their visitors. After a good dinner had been done justice to, Mr Poster, the president of the Kowai Club, called for three cheers for the Artillery, who, he considered, had fought a very determined uphill battle. He hoped soon to be able to arrange a triangular match between the Kaiapoi Rifles, the Artillery, and the Kowai Rifle Club, to be fired on the Kaiapoi range. Lieut. Hill, on responding, said that although his team had been beaten by sixty-eight points, he did not feel disgraced, as they had had to fire against really first-class shots. He then called upon his “ boys ” to return the compliment, which was given with all the strength of lungs that the gunners possessed. Mr Harry McAlpine, with his drag and four-in-hand, drove the team to the°range and back in a remarkably short time. The following are the scores : Kowai.
