INQUEST.
An inquiry touching the death of James Crilly—wdiose body w r as found in the estuary on Saturday last by Constables Daly and Whitty—was held at two o’clock this afternoon, at the Clarendon Hotel, before Dr. Coward, Coroner, and a jury, of whom Mr James Fergus was chosen foreman. After viewing the body, the following evidence was adduced : Thomas Patton was driving a horse and buggy towards Sumner on Thursday last, and°saw a man sitting on the water side partially undressed. James MeCleery, who is a cousin of the wife of deceased, deposed that he came from Dunedin about three months since. He was partially paralysed on the right side. About ten days ago deceased went to Now Brighton for sea bathing, and he went to Sumner on Thursday last for the same purpose. The body in the morgue was that of James Crilly.
Constable McGiil deposed that a messenger from Mr J. S. Monck called at the Phillipstown police station on November 23rd, and gave information that a man had boon drowned. Ho instituted a search, and on Saturday about one o’clock the body was found near -where he was seen to enter the water, and conveyed to the Morgue. The Coroner briefly addressed the jury, who returned a verdict of “ Accidentally drowned.”
