RAILWAY TARIFF ALTERATIONS.

The new railway tariff’ which is gazetted to come into operation on the 11th proximo, contains the following alterations :—Grain rate —There is a considerable reduction in the rates for grain, the rate per ton for 15 miles being reduced from 4s 5d to 3s lid per ton; 20 miles, from 5s 3d to 4s 4d ; 30 miles, from 6s lid to 5s 2d; 40 miles, from 8s 6d to 6s ; 50 miles, from 9s 4d to 6s lOd ; 75 miles, from 11s 5d to 8s lid; 100 miles, from 13s 6d to 11s; corresponding alterations being made for intermediate distances. The rate from Timaru to Lyttelton, 107 miles, is 11s 7d. These charges do not include handling. A considerable reduction has been made in the rate for hay, straw, &c. Special provision is made for goods car-, ried at owner’s risk. Where goods are carried at ordinary rates at owner’s risk, the owners have the option of having their goods carried at the risk of the railway by paying one-sixth additional to the ordinary rates.

A special demurrage charge is provided for the detention of empty waggons which have been ordered, as well as for trucks standing under loads. The rate for coal and fireclay from Springfield to Christchurch has been reduced from 7s to 6s ; from Glentunnel or Sheffield from 6s 2d to 5s 2d—a similar reduction being made in the case of South Malvern and Whitocliffs.

Provision has been made for the carriage of combines, omnibuses, tramcars, and empty iron tanks at half the measurement over the Lyttelton and Christchurch line.
