At a sitting of the Couifty Council to-day, some animated discussion ensued as to a promise of pecuniary assistance to the county made by the Government to Mr Petrie last session not being fulfilled. Dependence had been placed on that promise to meet liabilities for contracts falling in, and a statement of which was furnished the Government. According to the interpretation of Mr Martin, the resident engineer, of the word “ existing” he advised the Government that their promise did not apply to a number of the larger contracts. Consequently they were offered £355 to meet existing contracts while their liabilities on what as existing contracts had only just fallen in amounted to £3900. It was resolved in reference to other tenders since called for to inform Government that the county revenue is quite insufficient to maintain main roads, and that unless the Government will pay the amount of the contracts if entered into the Council will not undertake the maintenance of main roads. It was also resolved that the tenders for the main roads now under consideration be not dealt with until a satisfactory reply be received from the Government. It was stated, in the course of discussion, that the revenue of the county had been largely diminished by the legislation of last session; that Duller county received from the Government two thousand yearly for maintaining the Duller road; also, that there was greater traffic on the Grey-Roefton road than on any other in ahe colony.
