POPULAR SPORTS COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the above committee was held in the City Council Chamber at 4 p.m* yesterday. Present —His Worship the Mayor, Messrs W. R. Mitchell, H. Crooks, H. Atkinson, G. Turner, C. Walkden, T. Searell, S. P. Andrews, J. W. Drewett, WE. Samuels, Prank Hobbs. His Worship announced that Mr Alport had written apologising for his absence, having to conduct a sale at a distanceAlso, that he had received a letter from a citizen asking if it was possible to proclaim. Monday, December 18th, a holiday, instead, of the Saturday previous. After discussion it was agreed that it would not be advisable to substitute Monday, as the popular sports were intended to keep in remembrance the foundation of the Canterbury province. It was announced that Mr Louisson, of the Crown Brewery, had signified his intention of offering a silver cup, leaving its disposal to the committee. Mr G. T. White had also promised a silver trophy for the bicycle race. The Domain Board wrote granting permission for the sports to be held in the Park, stating also that the Board will give ,£2O towards removing the sand near the Armagh bridge entrance to the Park. The Secretary of the New Zealand Cyclists’ Alliance wrote asking that the bicycle prizes be trophies, since the rules forbade competition for money prizes, opining that the races will be for amateurs. Mr S. P. Andrews stated that two bicycle races were arranged, and the wishes of the cyclists had been anticipated go far as prizes were concerned. Mr T. Searell hoped that someone would see Mr N. Black, and arrange that the bicycle races at Hagley and Lancaster Parks did not clash as regarded time. Mr Drewett hoped that this would be attended to, as thereby some bicyclists might be enabled to win prizes at both gatherings. [Laughter.] Mr W. E. Mitchell thought the popular sports programme should be arranged, and forwarded to the Caledonian Society, who could do as they liked about time. Mr Searell hoped that Mr S. P. Andrews would see Mr Black on the subject. Mr Haskins did not see why the Caledonian Society should be consulted at aIL The popular sports were held on the 16th of December, to commemorate the anniversary of the foundation of the province, and not for the purpose of making money ; therefore its programme should not be altered to suit others, but rather the reverse. The Mayor agreed with Mr Mitchell s suggestion, and also to a certain extent with the remarks made by Mr Haskins. These sports were entitled to the premier position, and the other must be secondary. If alteration was needed it was for them to shape their programme by that of the popular sports committee. The name of Mr E. T. A. Puller was added to the list of committeemen.

The Secretary reported that Mr Cogan would he happy to render every assistance, and that a satisfactory offer had been made for the right Jof printing and vending the programme of the sports. The arrangement was ratified by the committee on condition of the sum offered being paid at once. Mr Drewett suggested, and it was agreed, that the Mayor allow the hustings to be erected for the Burnham band. It was agreed to advertise the programme without delay. After some routine business had been transacted, Mr Searell proposed, and it was agreed —That the committee’s thanks be tendered to the gentlemen giving prizes and trophies, viz., Messrs Sandstein, Coates and Co., Petersen and Co., G. F. White, his Worship the Mayor, and the proprietors of the Crown Brewery.” This concluded the meeting.
