NEWS OF THE DAY.
The Railway Commission. —The Commissioners did not hold a formal sitting today, hut were otherwise engaged in obtaining information on the subject of their inquiry. They will sit to-morrow morning at ten o’clock for the purpose of receiving evidence. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Weston, Richardson, Reese and Pavitt, have been appointed on behalf of the League to prepare statistics and other itformation, and, if they have made sufficient progress by that time, their evidence will be taken at to-morrow’s sitting. He Wasn’t on. —A somewhat remarkable incident in connection with business matters in Christchurch took place the other day. A firm, finding the pressure of circumstances compelled them to ask the indulgence of their creditors, issued a circular letter to that effect. One of the creditors, thinking to do the magnanimous, offered to take out the debt due to the firm ho represented in goods. This, after a little consideration, was agreed to on condition that the order was made a few pounds over the debt, so that the sellers might have a little cash to receive. In the largeness of his heart the gentle creditor consented even to this. A selection was made of goods up to about j£7 or AS over the debt, the sellers, of course, under the circumstances, making every line exceedingly cheap. Exit the complacent creditor having instead perhaps of a total loss, made as he supposed, a fairly decent general average. For some inscrutable reason, however, the indebted firm declined to deliver the goods. An interview was sought, and a proposition made to deliver the goods, amounting to say -£s2 the debt being A21 —on condition of half the indebtedness being allowed to stand over, and a cheque given for the balance. A2O. Strange to say the creditor did not see it, although with the 25 per cent. Tfh .ib of course would be added on to the price of the goods for sale in reduction of liability, the A2O cash, and the Al2 remaining liability, it would have been a very soft thing—for the debtor. However the crcdi or wasn’t on, and now the denouement of this little comedy is rapidly approaching in the shape of a visit to ti e levee of Mr John Ollivierj B.M. St. Albans Loan. —The meeting of the burgesses of St. Albans to consider the proposal for a loan to be expended in works in the borough will be held this evening.
The Eating op Papantji. —At the E.M. Court this morning- a case of some interest to residents in this suburb came up for hearing. The Avon Eoad Board sued for rates a ratepayer. The intent of the action was to test the validity of a certain proclamation which, in dividing the district among two or three ■ ocal bodies, had made many errors in laying down boundarylines. The point, however, was not argued,, as counsel for defendant was absent, and judgment was given for the Board. The case, however, may be reheard, if application is made in a given time. A report appears elsewhere. Lyttelton Matokalty No minations. — The Eeturning Officer at noon to-day declared two nominations to have been made for the Lyttelton Mayoralty, namely, Mr B. Weyburno and Mr S. E. Webb. Both the candidates are borough councillors. Mr Weyburne has been returned and rereturned to the Council by the ratepayers, and has thus, it would seem, held the confidence and respect of his fellow townsmen. Mr Webb is a much younger man, and hia experience as a councillor is such as he has gained during his first term of office, which is still current.
