AUCKLAND, November 21. The Rotorua, with the carbine champion and the Thames and Auckland representatives, az-rived at midnight. A dinner was held immediately afterwards. There is great dissatisfaction among the men at their treatment at Dunedin. A beautiful Aurora Australis was visible yesternight. WELLINGTON, Fovember2l.
At a meeting of the Executive Council this morning the case of Antonio G. Schell, recently found guilty and sentenced to death for a murder committed near Normauby, Taranaki, was considered, and it was decided to commute the sentence to penal servitude for life. The aurora was very brilliant last night. KAIKOURA, November 21.
A smart shock of earthquake was experienced here yesterday evening at nine o’clock, which contined for several seconds. At first it was slight, and the direction undecided, but as it increased in violence the direction was distinctly oast and west. Later a brilliant aurora was observed. O AMARU, November 21*: 3 Mr Thomas Proctor was re-elected Mayor to-day without opposition. Arrived —Barque Unicorn, Captain McCallum, from London, after an uneventful passage of 117 days. PALMERSTON NORTH, November 21.
Mr Dalrymple, formerly member of the Otago Provincial Council, died at Awahuri on Saturday, aged 83. DUNEDIN, November 21.
The following names are mentioned as candidates for the Peninsula :r—Messrs Larnach, Cutten, B. B. Cargill, A. J. Burns, Donnelly and G. Mcßride, Mayor of South Dunedin.
The Gladstone Company at Macetown have sent down 200ozs of cake for a fortnight’s crushing. At the City Court to-day, Messrs Barnett and Green were fined -£5 each for aiding in working a totalisator. Eight farmers in the Taieri district were fined twenty (?) and costs for not taking sufficient steps for the extermination of rabbits.
