Considerable activity exists in the military circles in Germany, and the fortifications along the borders of the empire have been strengthened and increased. November 10. The Turkish Government have decided to ced) the Thessalian frontier to Greece, and the Ottoman troops now assembled on the boundary line will be immediately withdrawn. Dissensions have arisen amongst the members of the Turkish Government, and a Ministerial crisis is imminent. The Egyptian question is the main cause of the differences which have arisen, and which will necessitate a change in the Sultan’s advisers. The returns in the biennial elections for the Lower House of Congress are now complete, and the result shows that out of 293 members elected a majority of fifty has been returned on the Democratic ticket. The decision of the election of 1880 is thus completely reversed, the Republicans on that occasion securing a majority. No further open outbreaks have occurred, but a strong feeling is still manifested amongst the populace of Vienna against the police. The military are patrolling the , streets with a view to the preservation of order, and the immediate suppression of any recurrence of violence. In various parts of Ireland the tenants have refused to allow their holdings to bo hunted over. A meet was held near Waterford when the mob assembled, and refused to allow the sport to proceed. The members of the hunt becoming incensed, turned upon the mob, and chased them from the field with their hunting whips. The Queen will review the hattallions of Household troops which have recently returned from Egypt at Whitehall on Saturday next, the 18th inst. It having been moved at a meeting of the Dublin city corporation that the freedom of the city should be conferred on Sir Garnet Wolsoloy in recognition of his eminent services, the motion, on being put to the meeting, was negatived. An attempt has been made by one of the sentinels on guard in the' Palace at Constantinople to assassinate the Sultan. His Majesty was walking along the gardens attached to the Palace when the man advanced towards him in a threatening manner. The Sultan perceived his danger, and ran from the spot, and, calling loudly for help, attracted'the notice of some of his attendants, who secured the sentinel before he had time to overtake his Majesty, who escaped entirely unhurt. Queen Marie Christina of Spain has given birth to a daughter. A seizure of bombs and other explosive materials has been made by the police authorities at Pesth, the chief commercial city of Hungary. It is believed that they were intended to be utilised in ft fresh attempt upon the life of the Emperor of Austria. November 14. The Arabs employed at Port Said in the work of coaling steamers passing through the Suez Canal, have, for some time past, been insubordinate. Their conduct has caused much delay to the Canal traffic, as they refused to work when requested by masters of vessels. After being repeatedly warned without any improvement taking place in their conduct, the Canal Company have dispensed with the services of all the natives employed in connection with
the shipping at Port Said, and have replaced them by Europeans. The French Government are reducing the amount of the allowance paid to religious bodies subsidised by the Stiue, and in consequence the salary of the Archbishop of Paris will be reduced by a sum of 15,000 francs per annum. The inhabitants of Jamaica have petitioned the Imperial Government to re-appoint Sir A. Musgrave to the Governorship of the island when Ins present term of office expires. The prayer of the petitioners will not be acceded to, as it has been definitely decided to appoint Sir A. Gordon, the present Governor of New Zealand as Sir A. Musgrav»’s successor. The policy of the Scanlen Government with reference to the Basuto difficulty is ; very unpopular - at the Cape of Good Hope, and a change in the Ministry is impending in consequence.
