THE MAYORALTY.

The time is fast approaching when tho citizens of Christchurch will have to elect their municipal cVef for the ensuing year. As is well kuown, tho present occupant of the civic chair, who has so worthily and honorably filled it during his tenure of office, is again a candidate This determination, it may be observed, does not arise in any way—as has been attempted to bo insinuated—from a desire to hold office for the sake of it, but is a yielding to an almost unanimous expression of publio opinion. Wo feel certain that the ratepayers will agree with ns that the services for a second year of a gentleman like Mr. Ruddenklau are calculated to bo of very groat benefit to the city. Some talk was made a little while ago about opposition, but nothing further has come of it. We hope—though by no means afraid of ths result—that the

roiee of tho ratepayers will be allowed to be unanimous on the subject, and that having consented to forego hia wellearned rest in the interests of the city, Mr Ruddenklau may receive at the hands of the ratepayers what we feel sure ho would take as a very high honor—viz., his return unopposed as Mayor of Christchurch. Whilst saying this we do not wish fcr ono moment to he misunderstood. There is not the slightest chance of a contrary result than the one we conceive will bo for the benefit of the city—ie„ the return of Mr Ruddenklau —bnt tho withdrawal of opposition, or rather the absence of it, will be a graceful acknowledgment on the part of the ratepayers of the many services rendered by our present Mayor.
