Gladstone made his promised statement regarding the proposed settlement of affairs in Egypt. In the course of his speech he announced that negotiations are now proceeding with the view to the conclusion of an Anglo-Egyp-tian Convention, providing that Egypt shall he charged with the cost of British occupation, and fixing definitely the period of such occupation. In the debate which followed Sir Stafford Northcote complained that the Premier’s statement was incomplete. Received November 15th, 10 p.m. November 14. Consols have recovered yesterday’s fall and again are quoted at 102). New Zealand securities continue firm at yesterday’s quotations. Adelaide wheat is unchanged at 495, ex store j New Zealand do, at 43s to 46s ; and Adelaide flour at 33s 6d. Australian tallow is quiet—best beef worth 425, and best mutton 43s 6d. Received November 16th, 1.15 a.m. November 15. Mr Gladstone, in the House of Commons, stated, as regards the Egyptian affairs, that, following the precedent observed after Waterloo, in concluding the terms of convention, fixing the charge of army occupation, no claim would he made for the expenses of the expedition. Sir Stafford Northcote said the precedent was not analogous, and protested against Mr Gladstone’s previous reticence. The Land Commission in Ireland report favorable progress in fixing rents. The Gray Committee justify the action of Judge Lawson in committing Mr Gray to prison. The health of the troops in Egypt is improving. The “ Standard ” states that the Eight Hon. 11. C. Childers, the present Secretary of State for War, becomes Chancellor of the Exchequer, vice Mr Gladstone, on December Ist. Lord Northbrook, First Lord of the Admiralty, will, it is understood, succeed him. November 15. A Parnellite candidate named Kenny has been elected to the vacant seat in the House of Commons for the constituency of Ennis. Obituary—The Eight Hon. Sir Andrew Buchanan, G.C.8., formerly Ambassador at Berlin, St. Petersburg, and Vienna. BERLIN, November 14. The German Diet was opened to-day by the Emperor William, who, in his speech on the occasion, stated that the peace of Europe might now be deemed to he assured. [special to press association.] Received November 15th, 5.30 p.m. November 14. The trial of the murderers of the Joyce family at Maamassua, Connemara, has commenced. One of the prisoners has turned Queen’s evidence. Prince Bismarck’s health is now stated to he excellent. The Conservative party intend to have another trial of strength with the Government on the cloture’question by proposing to limit its operations to one session only.
