KAIAPOI BOROUGH SCHOOL.

The monthly meeting of the committee of this school was held on Monday evening. Present —Messrs Parnham (chairman), Robins, Fraser, Moore, Coup, Revell, and Macfarlane. The head master’s report was read, which drew attention to a list of the worst cases of non-attendance. He pointed out that by using the infants’ room as the boys’ room, and placing the infants in the part of the school now used by the hoys, and making some alterations in the fittings, the schools might be better worked and the boys have the advantage of the largest playground for football and cricket. It was resolved to refer the list of absent scholars to the police to serve the notice required by the compulsory sections of the Act. On the motion of Mr Macfarlane, the proposed re-arrangement of the schools, to allow the boys the use of the larger playground, was approved of, but the committee regretted it had not funds at present available to effect the alterations. On the motion of Mr Revell it was decided to hold an entertainment on Friday, December 15th, in aid of the xrrize fund, the committee to assist the headmaster and teachers in arranging the programme of the same. Accounts amounting to -£‘ll 9s 8d were passed for payment. It was stated that the allowance for incidental expenses scarcely met the cost of coal and cleaning, and with respect to certain repairs to buildings and other expenses, the chairman was requested to confer with the Board of Education. It was decided that a special meeting of the committee be held on 27th; to consider the question of the manner in which the examination for prizes should be conducted, or the way in which the marks should be calculated, objection being taken by Mr Coup to too much importance being given to marks for attendance. The committee then adjourned.
