SOUTH WAIMAKARIRI BARD OF CONSERVATORS.
An ordinary meeting of this body was held at 2 p.m. yesterday. Present—Messrs P. Jones (chairman), B. W. England, J. L. Wilson, H. Atkinson, 11. W. Peryman, W. White, junr.,W. Boag and T. S. Lambert. The Chairman reported that the general state of affairs under the Board s control was satisfactory. Recently, whilst at the works, he noticed that the willows were making good progress, and that shortly the whole would form a thick and almost impenetrable mass, both above and below ground, and, without doubt, successfully resist the encroachments of the river. The works committee reported that tlie three groins at Chancy’s were now complete, except ballasting with rubble stone, 100 trucks of which the Government were sending from Port to Chaney s Corner free of cost. This would enable the Board to ballast and otherwise strengthen the works at a very reduced cost. 1- he total cost of the three groins for labor and material was £2BB 10s. The fencing at the lower works was nearly completed. The labor for the fence cost 3s 9d per chain. All the authorised works at Nos. 14 and 15 were completed, and the foreman had discharged five men. A plan of the river, showing the various depths of water at the groins, accompanied the report. The greatest depth was 35ft when the river was low. The report was read, received, and adopted. , A letter was read from Mr Hand, Hillmorton, agreeing to protect the plantations at the lower canqi from trespass by cattle or sheep, on condition of receiving a tenancy of the cottage and garden owned by the Board in that locidity for £5 a year. The writer also complained that persons were in the habit of trespassing on the Board’s reserves in pursuit of rabbits. The Chairman stated that he had seen Mr Hand, and partially complied with Mr Hand’s request, which he would like the Board to ratify. He would also suggest that authority should be given to Mr Hand to act as ranger for the Board, which, on the motion of Mr J. L. Wilson, seconded by Mr H. Atkinson, was unanimously agreed to. The finance committee’s report stated the credit balance at Bank to be £949 19s sd. Accounts amounting to £690 9s had been passed for payment. The report was unanimously adopted. Mr 11. Allison was chosen as returning officer to conduct the election of the new Board on the first Tuesday in January, !BS3. Communications were read from the Railway Engineer’s Department respecting the boulders for Chaney’s, stating that six truck loads had been forwarded that morning, and that the balance would be there by Thursday or Friday. The letter was received, and the Board generally expressed its obligation to the Hon. Mr Bolleston for giving the necessary instructions for same to be sent. The Chairman said the time had now come round when the Board should make its periodical visit to the upper works of the Waimakiriri, and it would be as well to determine who should be invited. Mr J. L. Wilson moved, Mr Lambert seconded and it was agreed—" That their Worships the Mayors of Christchurch. Sydenham and St. Albans, and also the chairmen of the various local bodies affected by the Board’s operations, be invited to accompany the members of the Board on Tuesday, December sth, at 9 a.m.”
