CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, November 15,
[Before G. Whitefoord, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness. —Clara Dodsworth was fined £l, or forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Geo. Craw, for being drunk, was fined £2 ; for breaking a window, £2, and ordered to pay tlye damage, ss. V agrancy. —Geo, Barker, alias Brennan, for stopping a man in the street and asking him for money to buy a half a pint of beer, was charged with soliciting alms. He had only been out of gaol for a few days, and made a strong appeal for leniency to the Bench. He was cautioned and discharged. John Bradley, alias Brady, for soliciting alms, was sent to gaol for seven days, to be kept to hard labour. Back-yard Robberies. —Walter Neilas was charged with stealing a boiler from the back yard of Geo. Hyde, in Lichfield street, on November Bth. The charge was fully proved, but there being several other similar charges against him pending, sentence was held over, and he was remanded till November 22nd.
Burnham School Children. —Henry Lewis was brought up on remand charged with having failed to pay up arrears for the maintenance of his children. It was stated that he had, since his arrest, paid £5 out of .£8 15s, and the case was adjourned for fourteen days to enable him to arrange for the balance. Ellen Skelton and Elizabeth Skelton, whose terms had expired, were, on the application of the master, re-committed for terms of one year. Alleged Nuisance. —Henry Patten was charged with having allowed offensive matter to drain into the side channel from his premises in Worcester street. The Inspector of Nuisances had served a notice on defendant requiring him to provide sufficient flushing power, or co connect with the common sewer running by his premises. Mr Garrick appeared for the City Council. Defendant stated that he intended to connect with the main sewer, and the case was adjourned for one week. Affiliation. —An application by Clara Brown for an order of this kind against Edward Harper was, after a long hearing, refused. Mr Loughroy appeared for the plaintiff, Mr Thomas for defendant; costs of Court and solicitor’s fee .£1 Is was allowed. Civil Cases. —Clark v Morris, claim £OB, for goods supplied; Mr Button for plaintiff, Mr Spackman for defendant; judgment for plaintiff for Jill 19s with costs. Judgments went for plaintiffs by default in Mason, Struthers and Co. v Vinson, £7 ; Ford v Chilton, .£25 4s Gd; Murphy v Port, .£5 15s 9d; Same v Pearce, ,£26 4s 7d; New Zealand Meat Preserving Company v Maydwell, .£45 7s 4d; Springfield Coal Company v Rugg, £24 5s 6d; and Rowatt v Pyne, £SO. Phillips v Shearer was adjourned till November 22nd. LYTTELTON. Wednesday, November 15. [Before John Ollivier, Esq., R.M.] Larceny. —Ellen Evans was charged with larceny of wearing apparel belonging to Mrs Eliza Cain, and valued at £4 10s. The prosecutrix said prisoner lived next door to her, and on the 10th inst. having left the house to go to Christchurch, upon her return she missed the articles of apparel, domestic ware, and quite a variety of household incidentals, found in the possession of the prisoner and identified by prosecutrix. Margaret FitzSimmona gave corroborative evidence. Cons cable McLellan also gave evidence. Mrs Eliza O'Connor, wife of Constable O’Connor, searched the prisoner at the gaol and found several articles upon her. These were now produced and identified by the prosecutrix. Prisoner, on being asked if she had anything to say, made a long and improbable statement, which the Bench responded to by sentencing her to three months’ imprisonment. Furious Riding. —Joseph Murie, a lad, charged with furious riding, explained that to oblige Messrs Woodyear and Ross’s Circus Company, he undertook to ride one of the horses from the performance to the stables. The annual bolted with him—a freak which now caused him to pay 10s and costs 2s. Civil Cases —H. N. Nalclor v H. P. Jones, claim £7 15s ; judgment by default. Baker v O’Connell, judgment summons, balance of costs, amount £4; order for immediate payment, or seven days’ imprisonment.
