TRADESMEN'S ATHLETIC CLUB BIRTHDAY SPORTS.

Holmes, M.H.R.'s ; judges, Messrs Corcoran, Scott, and Freeman ; starter, Mr J. Anderson handicapper,Mr P. C. Purchase. The Canterbury Tradesmen's Athletic Club's second annual sports meeting was announced to commence at noon yesterday at Lancaster Park, but it was a quarter past one before the first event on the programme was called. The attendance was good, considering the showery weather and counter attractions. At least 300 persons were present. The running track was in anything but good condition, pools of water and soft mud being visible in many portions of it. The management cannot be congratulated on the arrangements made, as considerable delay occurred between the various events. Indeed, there was a total absence of management, responsibility being disclaimed by every one. The Hibernian Band, under the leadership of Mr Pooley, was in attendance, and played a varied selection of music at intervals during the afternoon. The various events on the programme resulted as under : Maiden Race; 120 yards ; first prize '£3, second .£1; six entries. J. Nicholas 1 D.Petrie 2 Fivo started; time not taken; a close finish. Boys' Race ; 440 yards ; first prize £l, second 10s ; six entries. A. Hobbs, 10yds 1 C. Scrimshaw, scratch ... ... 2 Five started. Hobbs wrested the lead from Mussen at the corner, and won easily with about 12yds to spare. Free Handicap, 150 yards; first prize £3, second £2 ; fifteen entries. D. Petrie, 15yds 1 C. Pierce, 14yds 2 Eleven started. An exciting race and closely contested, all finishing in a cluster. Vaulting with Pole, handicap; first (prize £2, second £l. J. R. McGregor, Bft 6in 1 W. Lavery, Bft 2 Three compoted. Birthday Handicap, 150,300, and 500 yards; first prize .£3, second £4, third £2 ; seven entries. 150 Yards. A. Mummory, 16yds,3 points ... 1 C. Hulston, scratch, 2 points ... 2 J. E. Nicholas, 10yds, 1 point ... 3 300 Yards. A. Mummery, 16yds, 3 points ... 1 J. E. Nicholas, 10yds, 2 points ... 2 C. Hulston, scratch, 1 point ... 3 The 500 yards distance was not contested. Mummery taking first money, second and third being divided by Nicholas and Hulston, Two-mile Steeplechase; first prize .£6, second £3, third £1 10s. J. C. Cusack, 50yds 1 G. Whiting, 75yds 2 J. Wade, 100yds 3 Four ran. G. Goodwin (50yds) fell out in the first lap, in which Cusack passed his competitors and kept improving his position, winning with one hundred yards to spare. One hundred yards Handicap ; first prize £3, second .£2; ten entries. D. Petrie, 12yds 1 C. Pierce, 11yds 2 Eight started. The race was well contested, all being close together at the finish, Petrie winning by about two feet only. Strangers' race, 440 yards, open to all. comers; first prize £3, second .£1 10s. Hancock 1 Lye 2 Four started. Two Mile Walking Handicap. First prize £5, second £2, third £l. C. H. Pierce, 200yds 1 T. Ncary, 200yds 2 W. Spicer, 280yds 3 This was well contested so far as Pierce and Neary were concerned, Spicer never having the ghost of a chance. Eventually Pierce managed to win by a foot only, Spicer being 250 yards in the rear. High Jump Handicap. First prize £2, second £l. J. R. McGregor, scratch, sft 2Jin 1 W. Lavery, 3in, 4ft 4im ... ... 2 J. Cusack also competed. Half-mile Handicap ; first prize, £4 ; second, £2 ; third, .£1; eight entries. W. McGregor, 60yds 1 G. Whiting, 40yds 2 J. Atkinson, 40yds 3 Four started. McGregor came in at the finish with about thirty-five yards to spare. Hurdle Race, 440 yards ; over eight hurdles 3ft 6in in height; first prize, .£3 ; second, £2 ; third, £l. D. Petrie, 50yds 1 W. Lavery, 50yds 2 Two started. Won easily. One Mile Handicap ; first prize, £5 ; second, £2 ; third, -£l ; ten entries. G. Goodwin, 50yds 1 ! J. Wade, 100yds 2 j W. Spicer, 100yds 3 Five started. Cusack (50yds) fell out in j the second lap, whilst W. McGregor. (100yds) gave in the first time round'.- The i first man was about twenty yards ahead of tho second when breasting tho tape.

Hop, Step, and Jump Handicap; first prize j 62, second £l. McGregor, scratch, 40ft 1 Petrie, 12in, 38ft ... 2 Lavery also competed. Running- Long Jump Handicap ; first prize £2, second £l. McGregor, scratch, 19ft liin ... 1 Petrio, 12in, 18ft ... 2 Lavery also competed. Committee Race, 150yds (handicap); first prize .£2, second £l, third 10s. For this . event only two compoted, Purchase being the winner. Tug of War, open to all comers; ten medals and £2 10s cash ; post entries. This was somewhat exciting, the teams being from Little River and the Addington workshops respectively. The latter were the victors. This event concluded the meeting
