SECOND EDITION.

NEW . ZEALAND METROPOLITAN MEETING. First Day. Stewards —J. Brabazon, P. Cunningham, J. B. Gresson, S. Garforth, J. Grigg, L. Harper, C. Newton, W. Reeves, H. Wynn Williams,L. Walker, A. Wilson, S. C. Wason; judge, M. Studholme; starter, G. W. Coventry ; handicappers, the Handicapping Committee ; clerk of the scales, T. Acland; clerk of the course, E. W. Millett; hon.. treasurer, G. G. Stead.

Favored with lovely weather and a capital attendance, the Canterbury Jockey Club opened their Spring campaign under the most favorable auspices. The arrange- ■ ments were very good, Mr Penfold, the - secretary of the C.J.C., having evidently studied the comfort of visitors. This was specially noticeable in the arrangements for the totalisators, by which the investors were enabled to get their tickets without much trouble, and a total absence of the crowd- ■ ing and pushing so noticeable at the former meetings. The stands and carriage paddock being well filled. The road was more largely patronised than on any other previous occasion, there being all kinds of conveyances, including several four-in-hands, noticeable amongst the latter being the Royal drag, tooled by Mr Terrell, and boasting a good team of greys. Sport commenced with the Free Handicap, a mile spin, for which there were six goers. Sir Modred and Mataku being the favorites. It resulted in a win for the former.

The Free Handicap ; a sweepstakes of 3 sovs each, with 100 sovs added. One mile. Mr D. Proudfoof s b h Sir Modred, 5 yrs.

Butler) 0 After a very long delay at the start, causing several false starts, in which Natator was well to the front, a fairly good one was effected, Natator being fiist to show in front, with Hilda and Siesta in close attendance. Sir Modred, Matakau, and Legerdemain following. In this order they ran to Ford’s, where Siesta took the lead, with Matakau second, Natator third, Hilda fourth, the rest in a cluster. At the turn Siesta still led, with Sir Modred coming up on the outside, and down the straight a fine race ensued between Mr Proudfoot’s horse and Mr Bates’ mare. The horse, however, had a bit the best of it, and came away a winner by two lengths, Hilda second. Siesta, who had come up at the end, third, the rest finishing close up. Time, Imin 45 Jsec.

There were 246 investors on the totalisator inside, of -which fifty-eight were on the winner.

For the Derby, which came next, there were four starters, the Hon. W. Robinson’s Vanguard being the scratched one. Cheviot was the.favorite, though Nonsense had a following. Cheviot justified the good opinion of his backers by running almost from end to end, as Nonsense only led for a short distance at the start. The lot looked very fit when they took their preliminary, Cheviot being as fine as a star-, and looking all over a goer. The Derby Stakes, a sweepstakes of 20 sovs each, with 250 sovs added, for three-year-olds; colts Bst 101 b, fillies Bst 51b; second horse to save his stake. One mile and a half. Hon. W. Betting. 2 to 1 on Cheviot, 2 to 1 against Nonsense, 4 to 1 the other two. A very good start was effected. Nonsense being first to show in front, with Cheviot close up, Minerva hard held third, and Leos fourth. At Cutts’ Cheviot assumed charge of affairs. Nonsense second, the rest unchanged. In this order they ran till opposite Ford’s, when Minerva came up and took second place, Leos third, and Nonsense dropping into fourth place. At the turn into the straight Cheviot still held a commanding lead, with Nonsense coming up third, Minerva still being second, with Leos last. In the straight Webster called on Nonsense and brought out the whip, but was unable to stay with Cheviot, who came away a winner by about two lengths, and with a bit in hand. Leos ran into third place, with Nonsense fourth; about three lengths between second and third. Time, 2 min. 45i sec. There were 193 investors on the inside totalisator, of which number 101 were on the winner. WLNNEB~3~OF~THE~CANTEBBPBY DERBY.
