CRICKET.

LANCASTER PARK v ASHBURTON.

The first important match of the cricket season in Ashburton was played on the Domain ground on Thursday last, when a team representing the Christchurch Lancaster Park Club, and comprising several of the best bats of the club, paid a visit to the town to do battle against an eleven representing the Ashburton Club. The ground was in as good order as it is possible to get it, and the cocoa-nut matting pitch played very true; but the vagaries of the ball after being once outside the pitch was somewhat puzzling to the field, the surface of the ground being anything but what could be termed " as level as a billiard table." The Ashburton men went first to the wicket, and, with the assistance of 25- extras, succeeded in putting together 91 runs, the principal scorers being Gifkin, Simpson, Castelli, and Thomas. Both Gifkin and Simpson made a good stand, each showing strong defence and considerable hitting power when an opportunity offered The Christchurch men went to bat directly after lunch, and by good steady play ran up a score of 146 before they were all disposed of. The principal contributors were—F. Wilding 43, W. P. Reeves 23, A. C. Wilson 21, and W. D. Reeves 24. The Ashburton men went in for their second- innings, and when time was called the score stood at 48, with four wickets down. The fielding of the Ashburton men was better than that of their opponents, but the local men lost a great many runs through a great deal of undue hesitation on the part of the batsmen at the wickets. Subjoined are the scores : ASHBURTON.
