LINWOOD TOWN DISTRICT.
The first meeting of the Commissioners of the newly-formed district of Linwood was held last evening at the Heathcote Eoad Board office. Present —Messrs B. Halo, li. Clephane (chairman), E. Toomer, H. Toomer, J. Goodman, E. P. Glenn, and George Collier. Mr Goodman moved, Mr Hale seconded, and it was carried unanimously—“ That Mr Glenn be elected chairman for the first term.” Mr Glenn returned thanks, and had no doubt that the members of the Board would work harmoniously together. Mr E. Toomer moved that a finance committee, consisting of Messrs H. Toomer, J. Goodman, and the Chairman bo appointed. Seconded by Mr George Collier, and carried. On the motion of Mr Goodman, seconded by Mr W. Toomer, Messrs B. Hale, G. Collier, E. Clephane, and the chairman were appointed a sanitary and public works committee. On the motion of Mr Goodman, the public works committee were empowered to engage labor to carry on the work temporarily. Mr Clephane moved “ That the chairman advertise for a person to fill the office of clerk j also for two laborers. This was seconded by Mr Goodman and carried. The chairman reported that he had interviewed the managers of the various Banks, and that there would bo no difficulty in getting accommodation. Mr Clephane moved, and Mr Collier seconded, that the Colonial Bank bo appointed the bankers to the Commission. Mr H. Toomer moved as an amendment that the Bank of Hew Zealand be appointed. The amendment was carried on the easting vote of the chairman. Mr Clephane moved —"That the chairman act as treasurer to the Commission until the appointment be made.” Agreed to. A letter from Mr Correll, asking for work as a laborer, was referred to the works committee. A letter was read from the secretary to the Drainage Board, calling attention to the fact that stray cattle were damaging the drains in the district. Mr E. Toomer moved—“ That written authority be given to the pouudkeepor to the Heathcote Eoad Board to impound any cattle straying in the Linwood district." Seconded by Mr Collier, and carried. On the motion of Mr Clephane, seconded by Mr H. Toomer, it was agreed that the Drainage Board should be informed that the Commission had instructed the poundkeeper in terms of the foregoing resolution. On the motion of Mr Hale, seconded by 'Mr Goodman, the chairman and Messrs Clephane and Collier were appointed a bylaw committee. In reply to Mr Collier as to office accommodation for the Board, the chairman stated that he had been unable to see Mr Ales. Lean. Mr Clephane moved ing of Messrs Hale, Goodman and the mover be appointed to ascertain what offices can be secured to carry on the business of the Board, the said committee to report at the next meeting. Agreed to. Mr Collier moved that a letter be sent to the Heathcote Eoad Board, asldng that a statement of accounts with the Eoad Board and the Linwood Town District be furnished at the earliest convenience. Seconded hy Mr Hall and carried. On the motion of Mr Collier,, seconded by Mr H. Toomer, a vote of thanks was passed to the Heathcote Eoad Board for the use of the office, and to Mr Mills for his courtesy to the members. The meeting then' adjourned to the 13th inst., at 7.30 p.xa.
