By W. Scott, Jun
'Tis nierrie, 'tis merrie in the toonship new, And gaily the joy fires burn, For seven are chosen, men bold and true,
To run the wee concern. There's Goodman, and Hale, and Toomor's
twa, Clephane, and Glen o' the Hill, And Collier, the host, who aye makes boast That his pint holds fower times a gill. " What news, what news? " cried a grey pow'd man ; "What news from the fair Linwood ?" " I could greet with joy," so the answer
ran, "The news is sae bonnie and gude. " I gain my living by making shoon, I've a wife and five bonnie bairns, And noo they have chosen, the men o' that
toon, Power cobblers to guid their concairns. " They'll gravel the paths with shairp, shairp stanes, And used will the roller ne'er be; 'Twill make the proud carles rattle their
banes, And be sair on their leatherie.
" Oh, gude times are coming in Linwood toon, Oh, gude for the trade it will be ; A prude man is noo a maker of shoon, A prude man it's made o' me. " I'll deck my wife in a kirtle gay. And my bairns in suits o' slops; • And aye we will dunce to the pibroch's bray At a' the best Linwood hops." The auld, auld man, he scratched his pate, And never a word spake he ; But he sould his half acre on the Linwood estate At the fiist opportunitie.
