POPULAR SPORTS ASSOCIATION.

A meeting 'of this association took place at the City Council Chamber yesterday afternoon. Present—The Mayor of Christchurch (in the chair), Messrs Haskins (secretary), Mitchell, Crooks, Drewitt, Samuels, "Walkden, Atkinson, Alport and Andrews. Mr. Alport, as treasurer, reported that the correct balance in hand was £9l 9s, being a difference of a few shillings as compared with that reported at the last meeting. Mr S. P. Andrews, chairman of the programme committee, reported that the committee had met, and after mature deliberation had drawn up a list, which he thought would be generally satisfactory. The number of events would be considerably augmented, chiefly in those allotted for boys from sixteen years downwards. They had arranged to keep down as much as possible the professional element withont denying it proper encouragement. The amount proposed to be given in prizes seemed to be considerable, but examination would show that no extravagance had been indulged in. The Mayor announced his intention to offer a prize of .£3 3s. It ,was resolved to allot this prize to the winner of the boys under sixteen one mile race. The programme as made by the committee was read. It consisted of thirty-three events, sixteen of which are for boys under sixteen, the prizes, exclusive of trophies, &c, being of the value of £92. The programme was passed, subject to an understanding that the prizes for the more juvenile events are to be re- ; duced in value. It was resolved to advertise for tenders for the supply of a brass band, and that the master of Burnham school be written to asking him if their band could be allowed to attend the sports, and the expense of the same. The secretary reported that the Domain Board had been written to re the covering of the sand drift at the entrance to the sports ground, and the Mayor undertook to personally move in the matter. On the motion of Mr Crooks, the usual grant of .£ls was made for the purpose of providing sports, toys, and refreshment for infants attending the grounds. Mr Walkden mentioned that on the termination of last year's operations they had decided that it would be necessary, if children's sports were held, to fence in a certain area for the protection of the children. Mr Andrews said that the chairman of the Domain Board had given an encouraging reply as to his feeling regarding the improvement of the grounds, It was stated that the gate money for last year was .£7O. The committee proposed to rely upon the gate money and the rents of privileges for the necessary funds, as has been done for the past few years. After some other routine business the meeting adjourned till "Wednesday next.
