A conference of members of the Irish National Land League has been convened for to-morrow, at Edgworthtown, Leinster, by Michael Davitt, for the purpose of organising a movement to agitato for the better education of the people, the improvement of tenants’ dwellings, and the extension of industries, especially the fisheries of Ireland. The authorities in Dublin have deemed it advisable to increase the number of soldiers on guard at the vice-regal lodge in Phoenix Park. It is again generally assorted that Sir John Adye, late chief of the staff in Egypt, will succeed Lord Napier of Magdala in the Governorship of Gibraltar, a position which the latter has held since Juno, 1876. October 20. The Right Hon. Mr Mundella, vicepresident of the Council under the present Government, has delivered a speech in opposition to the proposal for rendering the education afforded in primary schools in all eases free.
The traffic by the railway recently constructed throughout the St. Gothard mountains is rapidly increasing. Mr Stanley, the celebrated explorer, has been banquette d in Paris, on his return from liis recent expedition to Central Africa. In the course of an interesting speech he detailed his experiences of establishing trading stations along the Congo, and stated that he had already formed four of these stations. Mr Stanley refuted a variety of calumnies which had been circulated against him in respect to the mode in which he had conducted the expedition, and denied having made any improper treaties with the native authorities. A letter has been published in the “ Times" newspaper from John Dunn, the Zulu Chief, which asserts that the return of Cetewayo must result in further bloodshed, as neither himself nor the other chiefs will submit to the restoration of Cetewayo’s supremacy. The police authorities at Leicester have effected an important seizure of Fenian documents in that town. They disclose the existence of a widespread conspiracy, and show that the secret movements of the Fenian organisation are now being in a great measure directed from England, where wire-pullers are less exposed than in Ireland from the inspection and detection on the part of the authorities. Herbert Bismarck, son of the Imperial Chancellor of Germany, has been appointed Secretary of the German Embassy in London. :i The Duke of Connaught is to receive the Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, in recognition of his recent services in the Egyptian campaign. The finances of Egypt are rapidly being put in order. There is now a large sum of money in the Treasury, and revenue is flowing in freely.
