SOUTHBRIDGE FARMERS' CLUB.

The ordinary monthly meeting was held at Mitchell's Royal Hotel on Monday evening. Present—Messrs G. O. Waby (in the ohair), J. B. Campbell, J. J. El win, M. H.Boott, W. Gabbie, Houston, Smith, Cameron, Bud. dock, Bennie, John Campbell, and Miln. The following new members were duly elected :—Messrs W. Abbott, B. G. Staveley, J. Inwood, John Bennie, and F. Overton. The following new members were nominated : —Messrs George Baxter and Thomas Miln. Mr William G-Abbie reported that he had made enquiries as to the most suitable place for a club room, and had to lay the following offer of the Orange Hall before the meeting : —The hall to be at the service of the club for meetings, with fire and lights, for 5s per night. Mr J. B Campbell moved—" That, while thanking the Orange Hall committee for their very liberal offer, this meeting is of opinion that, considering the circumstances of the club, the present place of meeting is sufficient for the purposes of the club." Seconded by Mr Scott and carried. The small birds question was then brought on for discussion.

After a few preliminary remarks, the chairman suggested the formation oi a sparrow club.

Mr Houston thought the matter ought to be left in the bands of the Government; that it should be compulsory for farmers to poison their own land, end that a t x should be levied for purposes of poisoned grain. Several other members having epiksnenihe subjsot, Mr J. Campbell moved-" That Mr J. B. Campbell bo requested to bring before tho Road Board at its next meeting the advisableness of tho Board at oucs using its power, given them by the Small Birds Nuisance Act, to livy a rate for tho purposes of the Aot, and that Mr Campbell be further requested to report tho result at tho next meeting of the olub."

Seconded by Mr Ruddosk and otriied. The rating powers o£ the North Raksia Board of Conservator* was tho next subject brought on for discussion. Messrs Houston, Campbell, Buddock, Smith, Gobble, Klwin, Benuie, and the chairman took part in the discussion. The general opinion was- against a portion of the district being burdened with a special rate when the works were for tho general protection of the district. Mr Elwin moved—" Tkat until tho lac d in the Bllesmere district be defined as to its liabilities to flood by oompetent engineers, after taking proper levels and thoroughly going into the matter, this club considers that all debts hitherto contracted by the North Rakaia Board of Conservators should be met by a general rato over the whol« district." Seconded by Mr Ruddock mil carried. The Chairman announced that the subject for discussion at the next meeting would te, "Preparation of Soil for the Growing ol Turnips and other Boot Crops, especially ita ' connection with Artificial Msnurei,"
