CRICKET.

Tho cricket season in Ashburton was formally opened yesterday afternoon, with a match between tho Ashburton and Borough Clubs. The match was played in the Domain, where, in order to improve the rough pitch, coooanat matting had been laid down. The weather being fiao, there was a fall muster of tho two teams, and a fair sprinkling of onlookers.

The following players have been chosen by tho match committee of theCantorbnry Cricket Association for special practice, with the view of selecting an eleven to play against the Auckland team next month l —D. Beeves, C. Strange, G. Watson, F. Wilding. The special practices will take place at Lancaster Park on Mondays and Thursdays, until further notice, from 4 to 6 p.m., beginning on Monday next. The above list is not to be considered as final, and other players may from time be added to the number, or substituted for some of those named.
