AUCKLAND, October 16

Among the passengers by the Australia is Mr Warwick Weston, inspector of the South British Insurance Company, after two years’ absence in America and Europe. The session of tho Auckland Diocesan Synod commenced to-day. The Bishop delivered an exhaustive address.

J. B. Gaylord, advance agent for Barnum, was a passenger by the Australia to Sydney. The great showman ha# conceived the project of forming a Congress of Nations, consisting of representatives of all the savage and uncivilised races on the face of the earth, and Gaylord’s business is to appoint an agent in each centre for procuring these, besides keeping a look out for animated monstrosities and people of extraordinary powers or peculiarities.

OAMAEU, Ootober 16. A vote of the burgesses was taken to-day upon a proposal to borrow £14,000 to extend the borough waterworks. Tho object is to increase the motive power for manufacturing and other purposes. Thera are 566 burgesses on the roll, and 460 voted, 396 being for, and 65 against tho proposal. The extension is reckoned to give an additional 350 horse-power, the greater part having been applied for in advance. The present season, as far as it has gone, has been the most seasonable experienced hero for the past eight or nine year*. The young crops and grass are looking splendid, and a fine harvest is anticipated, DUNEDIN, October 16.

Meiers Briscoe and 00, hare received cable advices of a sharp advance in the English iron market, quotations having advanced 10s to 12j 6d per ton all round. A young woman, named Gray, made an an attempt to commit suicide at the Ocean Beach on Sunday. Mr H. It was also resolved to write to the Hons. Messrs Diok and Oliver to support the request. The Hon. Mr Oliver ha# forwarded to tho Harbor Board a report compiled by Mr O’Connor, 0.8., on the bar. He shows that the minimum depth of water in June, 1882, was l<sJffc. Tho dredge started on the Ist July, 1882, and tho soundings made by the Public Works department in the middle of August gave 18ft. He speaks very favorably of the prospect of permanent improvement. Five men in a small rowing skiff had a narrow escape from being drowned to-day near Port Chalmers. The air-tight compartment in the boat burst, and only far one of the party getting out and holding up tho side of the compartment the boat would have sunk. At the adjourned inquest on the child Bowie, killed by a train at Gore last week, the driver and shunter were examined. A verdict of “ Accidental death ” was returned.

Kellar and Guimard closed a successful, season to-night. They gave an expose of the cabinet and the rope tieing deception. The entertainment is the most extraordinary which ever visited the colony.
