HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.
The following events were disposed of yesterday after we went to press Half-mile Handicap (Mr Hogben’s prize). A. Wagner, 5 yds, 1 ; T. K. Burt, 90 yds, 2 ; P. Ford, 20 yds, 3. About twenty started. Wagner soon went through the field and passed the starting point first, Bart second, and Taiaroa third. Coming into the straight Ford took third place, bnt could not succeed in overhauling his very juvenile competitor, who ran gamely to the finish, coming in about three yards in front of Ford. Wagner won easily. Time, 2min 21 4 sseo. 200 Yards, under thirteen. A. S. Appleby, 1;L. W. Appleby, 2. Seven started. The winner led from the start and passed the post about four yards ahead of his brother. Time, ISJaec. Hurdle Race, 120 yards. Final heat. Matsow, 1; Ford, 2. Walton and Q. E. Richardson also started. This was a very pretty race, and there was a splendid struggle between Matson and Ford, resulting in a close and exciting finish, the former winning by only a yard. Both boys took their jumps in good style and almost together. Time, 21 l-ssoc. 4ioyds, under 14 (Rev. C. Turrall’s prize ) G. Forbes, 1; O. M. Turrell, 2. Nine started. Forbes wont to the front when about half-way from home, and won in a canter, Fisher an indifferent third. Time, VOJaeca.
Mile Race (Mr Miller’s prize.) A. J. Wagner, 1 ; H. Hey wood, 2; 0. R. Clark, 3. Nine started. Clark, Heywood and Moir made the running, followed by Wagner and Taiaroa. This was the order during the first lap, and nntil the end of the second, when Moir retired. Wagner, who ran with great judgment, put on the steam at the S.B. corner, and soon took first place. Coming np towards home Clark had to give way to Hr, ey wood, who spurted gamely, and passed tho post about 10yds behind Wagner. Clark a good third. Time, smin. 25seo. One Mile Walk (Mr Clark’s -prize.) A. J. Wagner, 1; F. W. Ford, 2. Eleven started for this race. Moir led nntil half-way round the last lap, when being pulled np for breaking, ho retired in favor'of Ford, Wagcer being close np and the others nowhere. A splendid race ensued between Wagner and Ford, both walking strongly and in good style. The former, however, eiayed the longest and won an exciting contest by about five yards. H. H. Pounds was third. Time, 9tsius.
Three-legged Race, 100 yards. Wilkinson and O. Richardson, 1; H. Poatlethwaite and B. Papprill, 2. Consolation Race, 220 yards. Montgomery, 1; Q. Von Haast, 2, Won by two yards. This was the last event on the programme.
The Challenge Cup, presented by Mr W. Montgomery, M.H.R., for the greatest number of points obtained by any competitor, was won by Wagner with 28 points, Matson being next with 17, and Bruce third with 13. Tho prizes were presented on the ground by Mrs Miller, after which cheers were given for tho winners and for Mr and Mrs Miller, and the proceedings terminated.
