SHIPPING STATISTICS.

During the September quarter just expired ■ the shipping returns show a decrease upon -of the corresponding quarter of last year. The same remark which has been made when_ refemngto the shipping of this port on previous occasions is true of the retains given below, namely, that the port of Lyttelton by its superior Jhsrbor facilities and endowments holds o steadily improving position amongst porta to which tbs larger class of ships may be profitably sept. In paring the returns cf former years with the present it will be found that there has been an -immense increase in the tonnage of the shipping riewed relatively to the actual number of ships. Referring to back dates it is found that in tho September quarter of 1870 twenty five vs?aria entered in from foreign porta, and their total . tonnage was but 7849 tons. In game period in 1882 bot twenty* two vessels entered in from ports, but their total tonnage amounted to 13,1 £9 tons, almost double the tonnage of that of 1870, though the number of vessels was actually lass. Subjoined will be found the number of vessels that arrived from foreign ports daring each September quarter since 1870 to date, and the number of clearances for foreign ports, also the total tonnage. The number of vessels which arrived from London during the same period in j»»«li year ia also noted, and tha number ef vessels despatched for the United Kingdom. Intercolonial vessels are included, and in comparing the past returns with the present scvount should he taken of the circumstance of there being a large number of vesiels included ia the returns which in former years were regular traders between Newcastle and this port sad Hobart and this port, a trade that has Utterly fallen oft very considorably.

Total clearances of all vessels, foreign and coastwise, during September quarter of the present year:—2i6 vessels, of 27,221 tons, a decrease of 33 vessels, or of 5563 tons on the quantity of shipping as shown by the clearances for the corresponding period last year. Of this decrease the table above shows that 5365 tons of the deficiency between this year’s clearances and last year’s was in foreign clearances alone.
