[By Telbsba^h.] [Per e.e. Hanapouri, at the Bluff.} MELBOUBNB, October 4, At the Hunt Club races at Flemington on Saturday, Alhambra won the Huat Club Steeplechase, Allusion the Flying Stakes. The Open Steeplechase was won by Abdallah, and the Flat Eaoo by Sargent. In the latter race Hebrew ran a splendid second. Dr. Barker’s case baa been considered by the Cabinet. They are of opinion that no official inquiry need be granted as called for by Dr. Barker. The Police Commission is still sitting. A statement wos put in yesterday in writing by a member of the criminal class, stating that robberies are frequently caused by the detectives employing men to persuade released prisoners to commit fresh crimes in order that the detectives may gat credit for finding them out.

SYDNEY, October 3. At tho fire in George street last night Mrs Wright, wife of the proprietor of the house, was burned to death.

On Saturday an outbreak occurred in the Parramatta Gaol. Soma prisoners were refractory, and the police threatening to charge with fixed bayonets, soon subdued the riot. The eight hours’ moyement is extending, and many trades are on strike for higher wages.

The first races in connection with Mr Punch’s trophy commenced to-day on the Parramatta. In the first division between Laycook and McDonald, Layoock won by twelve lengths. In the second division between Kush and Pearce, Bush won by a quarter of a length, and could have won easily. In the third division Triokett and Beach rowed neck and neck for some time. The ship Erato, from Adelaide to Great Britain, via Portland, has been driven into a dangerous position two miles from Oape Jaffa lighihouae. fiho is at present riding safely, and tugs have gone to her assistance. Judge Blake has mat with a very serious accident. Yesterday, while out driving, the horses bolted, and the Judge was thrown out and severely cut. The injuries are considered dangerous.
