CHRIST'S COLLEGE SPORTS.

The annual sports in connection with Ohiißt'a College were held to-day in the College grounds. The weather was all that could bo desired, and the attendance good, the presence of a large number of ladius—particularly in the afternoon giving an additional attraction to the proceedings. The programme, whioh was well arranged, ooinprided a large number of events, the firßt of whioh oommenoed at half-past nine o'elook. The succejs of the sports w»a attributable in a great measure to the exertions of the following gentlemen:—Judge—Mr O. C. Oorfe ; starters—-Messrs E. A. Worthy and T. D. Ooudell; timekeeper—Mr J. B. Harrison ; committee—O. Borton, A- G/.Cox, W. Hall, T. H. Lowry, A. J. Webb, and A. H. Williams. The following are the partiouluis respecting the CHALLBNGB CHI'S. The Old Boys' Challenge Cup was presented to the school by Old Boys in 1875. It is held for one year by the winner of moat points in the events open to the whole school. The winner of the the Mile, Quarter, Hundred, Hnrdle and Walking race scores fire points, the second two. The winner of the Half-mile Handicap scores five points, and the second two, provided that thfiy start from scratch. The winner of the Patting tho Weight, Throwing the Cricket Ball, Long Jump and High Jump scores three points, the second one. The winner of the Fives scores five points. The following are the names already inscribed on this cup:-E. V. Hamilton. 1875; F. G. Wostenra, 1876; H. Brown, 1877; H. Beswick, 1878; J. C Grigg, 1879; C..T. Newton, 1880 ; and W. P. Studholme, 1881. The Ladies' Challenge Cup wes presented to the school by some of the ladies of Canterbury in 1868, to be held for a year by tho winner of a mile race, open to boys under 16 years. It has been held by the following :—G. C. Hill, 1863; H. Murray, 1869; M. Davie, 1870; G. 8. Mathias, 1871; B. W. Westenra, 1872; A. Mathias, 1873 ; F. G. Westenra, 1874; L. A. flawkes, 1875; G. A. Smith, 1876; E. H. Stafford, 1877; H. Warren, 1878; H. Bourn, 1879; W. Langdown, 1880; W. Helmoro, 1881.

In 1877 Mr Gonld presented a cap for a quarter of a mile race, open to boys under 15 if any boy won the cap twice it became his property. It was won by A. Morgan. Mr Gonld has accordingly given another cup for the same race. The following names are inscribed en it:—J. Newell, 1879 ; C. Torlesae, 1880; and H. Miller, 1881. In 1879 Mr Corfo presented a Challenge Cap for the Old Boys' Baca, on which the following names are inscribed:—A. Mi Ollivier, 1872; T. B. Moore, 1873 ; P. Sheath, 1874; W. Tosbwill, 1875; A. ». F. Johnston, 1876; A. Templer, 1877 ; H. McCardell, 1S78; L. Mathias, 1879 ; L. A. Hawkes. 1880 ; Q. Helmore, 1881. In 1881 Mr Grigg presented a Challenge Cup, to be held by the winner of most points, under 14. Last year it was won by M. Kobison. In 1881 also Mrs Palmer presented a Challenge Cup, to be held for a year by the winner of the Qaarter-inile, Open. In 1831 it was won by G. Palmer. Lowry, 17ft 2in 2 J. Owen, a. H. Williams and A. J. Webb alsa competed. . High Jump. Open to boys under fourteen. P. Fisher, 4ffc 2in 1 F. J. Cowlishaw, 4ft lin 2 C. S. Cantrill, E. Harris, H. Fletcher, and T. C. Perry, also competed. The three latter were soon outjumped, acd the event was afterwards closely oontested, the style of tho winner being very good for a youngctcr. Mile Bace. Nine started, but at the end of the itsoond lap five had retired. B. Garrick was amongst the loading boys until half way through tha third lap when he gave up, and Fletcher took the lead, which he maintained to the finish, notwithstanding a plucky effort by Cowiishaw to overhaul him, winning by about Byds ; Hawkas a bad third. Time smin 45800. Milo Race. Open to whole school. W. Hclmore 1 A. H. Williams 2 P. J. Hamilton 3 W. J. Hall and F. G. Kimball also started. Helmore led from the start, followed by Williams. Kimbell retired during the third lap. Williams mads a spurs at the finish, but was. unable to oaten Helmore. who won by a few yores, Hamilton an indifferent third. Time, smiu 14seo. 100 yards, under eleven. A. P. Lingard 1 A. Macbeth 2 G. Kobison 3 Four others started. Linflatd won easily. Time, 15secs. 100 yards. Open to boys under fourteen. H. B. Williams 1 P. Fisher t F. Cowlisbaw t f Dead heat.

There was a field of twenty-two for this race, and an excellent start waa effected. The finish was exceedingly close, and it was somewhat difficult to allot tho positions of winnerß. Time, 13seo. 100 Tarda. Open to whole school. A. 3. Webb 1 C. Hamilton 2 T. H. Lowry ... 3 F. Mills. H. B. Miller, A. G. Cox, G. F. Turner and M. Stack also Btarted. The first three boys wero very close together at the finish. r Ximo, 10 3.ssec. 100 Yards. Open to boys under twelve. W. S. Cantrell 1 M Cuff 2 Eight started. Time, 13iiec. Qaarter-mile. Open to boys under fifteen (Mr Gonld's Cup). F. Harris 1 M. C. Robison 2 A. L. Temple 3

Six others started. Harris went away at the start, and maintained the lead to the finish, winning easily. Tirao, 65sec. Quarter Mile. Open to whole school (Mrs Palmer's Cup). O. H. Hamilton + A. J. Webb + T. H. Lowry 3 t Dead heat. A. H. Williamß, H. H. Miller, and J. Owen also started.

Webb went to tbe front when a little more than half way round, and looked like winning ea»il7, but Hamilton mode an effort at the turn home, and en exoiting fieish ensued, resulting in a dead heat for first place, liowry a few yards behind. Time, 59aec. This concluded the first part of the programme, and there wa3 an interval for luncheon, the next event commencing at half ■ past two o'olock. Half Milo Handicap. He assumed first place half way round the second Jap, and won by about fifteen yards. Helmoro came up well at the finish, and was about eight yards in front of Cotterill, The Half-mile Baoo, opaa to boys under twelve, was proceeding when we went to PNM.
