HAWKE’S BAY J.C. MEETING. NAPIBB, October 3. The J.C. Spring Meeting to-day was very successful. The weather was fine, though windy, and there was a large attendance. Good fields mustered, and there were several close finishes. There were two totalisstors on the ground, bat their working gave great dissatisfaction. The machinery of one was so defective that it had to be closed, and it was alleged that the other several times'gave false registers in the totals. They are Dunedin made machines locally owned. The results were as follows : Hawke's Bat Guineas— los eovs, with a sweep of 5 sove each for acceptors added ; colts and geldings Set 101 b, fillies Sat 51b; one mile. Mr Allan McLean’s b g Kingaak, by Hero
Toitoi 1 Mr Donnelly’s b g Eangipo 2 Mr Smyth’s hr g Yankee 3 Mr Nairn’s br g Laribandiere, Mr Douglas’ br o Mahenga, and br f Teata also started. An indifferent start resulted in Te Ata going off tho course and Yankee going away with the load. Kingask was sloes up at the back of tho course. Carmen bolted, and Kingask went to the front. They ran ia this order until entering the straight, when Bangipo challenged tho leader, but efter an exciting finish Kingask posted the post half a length in advance. Time, Imin sseo. Hubdles—6o sovs ; two miles. Mr Douglas' ch gAG, 6 yrs, lOst 91b ... 1 Mr Page’s Morning Star, Mr Bloomfield’s Tartar, Mr Donnelly’s Kuahlne, Mr Stock’s Lonehand also started, but only A G got home. This was a very hollow affair. Lonehand fell at the first hurdle, unseating his jockey, Tartar soon aeanmed the command, but he ran round the third hnrdlo, and was out of it. Huahine next persistently refused. The r„co was thus reduced to a match between Morning Star and A. G., tho former having a gcod lead. At the lest hurdle the Star came down, leaving A. G. to canter in. Spring Handicap, 200sovb ; one mile and a
half. Mr Martin’s Mavis, 6yrs, 6st 81b 1 Mr Allen McLean’s Louie, 4yrs, Bst 2 Mr McLean’s Virginia Water, syra, Bst 121 b 3 Mr Jones’ Prim, 7st 101 b ; Mr Stock’s Lonehand, 7st 111 b ; Mr Wheeler’s Merlin, 7st 6ib ; Mr Broughton’s Otnpai, 7aS lib; Mr Ohittum’s Dan, 6at 21b, also started. A bad dismissal saw Mavis first away, all the rest close up, except Lonehand and Otnpai, which were outpaced. Prim took the lead efc the half mile, to yield it to Virginia Water a little further on, Louie taking second place. On entering tho straight Mavis came up very fast and a magnificent race ensued between the trio, and was won by a head. There was some distance between the second and third. Prim was close up. Time, 2min. 46Jseo. Tbial Plate, 30aova ; half mile; two-year-old colts, 6it 101 b; geldings, Sat 51b. Mr McLean’s b f Ixobina, by Kingsborongh Etionette ... ... ... ... 1 JJr Donnelly’s br t Waewaetmki, by Musket —Aconite ... 2 Mr Douglas’ b f Nymph, by Patriarch Nyraph S Botina had the best of the start, and uovor allowed the ether to got on terms, winning easily by ten lengths. Maiden Plate, SOsovs ; one mile and a quarter. Captain Hussell’a Leonora, by Loolinns — Gossip I Mr Wehiua’s Kuni ... 2 Mr McLean’s Kingask... ... ... Mr Smyth’s Yankee, Mr Donnelly’s Wuewaotika, Mr Imnglaa’ Mabenga, Mr Mot can’s Lubra, and Mr Bader’s i'o Ata also ran. Te Ata gave some trouble at the first. She start was in favor of Leonora and Wsewaetiki, with Yankee next. At the railway turn Kuni tried to get on terms, but tho daughter of Leolinus and Gossip cantered home H.B easy winner. Flying Handicap, 75sovs; three quarters of a mile. Mr Martin’s br g Mischief, syrs, 9flt ... 1 Mr Bussell's br g Kingoraig, 4 yrs, 7si lib... 2 Mr Chitham'a b g Dan, aged, 6st 81b _ ... 3 Mr Donnelly’s Sangipo, Cat 121 b; Mr McLean’s Frederick, Set 51b; Mr Wheeler’s Merlin, 7st 91b, also ran. „ . Mischief want to tho front at the fall of the flag, and wts never headed, winning by half a length from Kinoraig. Dm was a very indifferent third. The Hack Hack. Won by Hevetanuga, concluded tfco day’s proceedings.
