Lloyd's Register returns to May 31st, 1882, ehowß the value of steamers in the Mercantile Marine of England to be, in round numbers, 489,000,000 ; iron and steel sailing ships, .£20,700,000; and sailing ships of wood and composite, £17,000,000. At the date the returns was made np the steamers building were estimated at a value of £35,000,000. The above includes only vessels of over 100 tons register tonnage, so that to it must be added the -value of the fishing fleet of the United Kingdom, which, no doubt, could easily be siren, as well as the yaohts of the United Kingdom, pleasure steamers, and the fleet of toga always employed. The numerous steamers -in the China and Japan trade, the Australian, Hew Zealand, Indian, and other steamers in which British capital is invested, but not regis--tared in England, would, it is thought, if computed even on a low baßis, add another £60,000,000 to the figures given, making in sound numbers £230,000,000, which represents the capital of the English Mercantile Marine.
