Robbbex fbom THB Pkesow.—George Maslin, who had been brought np as a vagrant on Monday, and, in consequence of nor Lain evidence then given had been reraaiided, was now charged with the above offence, the lesser one being withdrawn. William Lyall, a dairy farmer, of Pigeon Bay, deposed that he arrived in Ohristchuroh on the afternoon of Ssptember 25th. He met prisoner in the City Hotel on Wednesday morning last, at 7 a.m. Prisoner had followed hira in, and had several drinks then aud during the forenoon at his expense. Prosecutor had a purse about him ; it contained at least £8 in one-pound notes, two photographs, and some receipts. They went into a private room, and prosecutor showed the photographs to the prisoner, who might havo seen the money in the purse. Proieoutor was returning the purse to his breast pooket : prisoner said " Stop, I shouldn't like you to lose that," and pretended to assist in putting baok the purse. In about flvo minutes afterwards the prisoner disappeared, and so had the purse. Proseoutor could not remember when ho misled tho purse, but it was soon after prisoner had left, and there had not bean anyone in the room in the interval. Prosecutor had beau drinking, but was steady enough to transact business. The pocket spoken of was in tho inside of his vest. On tho following morning, Thursday, preseoutor found the prisoner at tho Golden Fieeoe Hotel, and charged him with the theft, saying if the portraits were giveu up the loss of tho j money might bo overlooked. The prisoner | disclaimed all knowledge of prosecutor or of his purse, and got away. He was not seen by proseoutor until after his arrest on another oharge. Cross-examined by prisoner. Had in tho early part of the week shown the portrait; in the book or purse to many persons in public houses. James Jackson, a traveller residing at Armagh street, stated that he saw proseoutor on Thursday morning last, shortly before eleven o'clock, at the City Hotel. The prisoner was alone with him. They went into a side room. Next day witness saw them together again at the same place. Proseoutor said he wanted to give tha prisoner in oharge for stealing £8 from him. Prisoner then went away down High street, and got into the Southern Hotel siid got off by another door. J. H. Voeke. man of all work at the Southern Hotel, deposed that the prisoner entered that house in the front and passed quickly through the baok door. That was on Thursday morning at about seven o'olock ; witness was scrubbing the floor. Prosecutor followed the prisoner almost immediately, and inquired for him. He ai jo went through the back, but lost himself, and did not find the prisoner. John Wetton, a gunsmith, of Madras street, stated that he saw prisoner coming out of the back of the Southern Hotel. He seemed in a hurry. Witness asked him what was his hurry. Prisoner made some unintelligible answer, and passed up George street at a run. Immediately afterwards witness saw the prosecutor and Jackson at the hotel. Detective O'Connor stated that on Sunday evening last he arrested prisoner, saying he wanted him for robbing Lyall. Prisoner had only one shilling on him, and said he expected witness. The arrest was made on a oharge of vagrancy only. William Mohr, boots at the City Hotel, gave some evidence, and tho prisoner was then committed to taka his trial at the next sessions of tho Supreme Court to be holden at Ohrißtohuroh. Maintenance op a Pabbnt.—James Spiers, who with other members of the family had been ordered to pay 15s per week for the maintenance of their father, David, now objected to the amount. The oaie was adjourned to allow timo for inquiries.
