Consols have declined -J-, to Now Zealand securities are unchanged at the following quotations:—Five per Cent. 10-40 Loan, 105£, ex div.; Five per Cent. 1889 Loan, 106£; Four and a Half per Cent. 1879-1904 Loan, IOOf. Colonial breadatuffa continue very dull, Adelaide wheat has declined Is, to 465, ex warehouse, and Adelaide flour has also declined Is, to 335. Australian tallow is quiet at 44s 6d for the best beef and 46s for best mutton. The tone of to-day’s wool auction was steady, but tbs demand is not active. The catalogue consisted of 11,100 bales. Arrived—Brodick Bay from Lyttelton (May 23rd); Pareora from Auckland (May 30tb); Closeburn from Lyttelton (June 12th); Arabella from Bluff (Juno 21st); Gareloeh from Lyttelton (June Ist). September 29.
The Australian cricketers were entertained at a banquet last evening at the Criterion, prior to their departure for Australis, by the colonists now in England. Sir Henry Barclay, formerly Governor of Victoria, occupied the chair, and daring the evening warmly complimented the cricketers upon their successes in England. Two hundred and sixty guests were present. ALEXANDRIA, September 28. A goods train loaded with ammunition exploded while standing at the railway station, Cairo. The British officers were holding a race meeting in the vicinity at the time, and a large number ef Arabs and Europeans, who were near the train, were blown away by the force of the explosion, thirty persons being killed. The station and neighboring buildings are in flames. Explosions of a similar nature continue to occur. The cause is attributed to intense heat.
Received Sept. 30th, 0.55 am. ALEXANDRIA, Sept. 29. It is estimated that by the explosion of ammunition at Cairo British stores and material to the value of folly £IOO,OOO was destroyed. [_*' Argus" Special, pee United Press ’ Association.] Received September 29th, 9 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 28, 7.11 p.m. The ceremony of consecrating the Czar as Alexander the 2nd, Emperor of Russia, was secretly performed during hie recent visit to Moscow on the pretence of opening an exhibition. Six cruisers for the Australian squadron are being fitted out and armed at the Chatham dockyard. Received September 29th, 10 p.m. September 28, noon.
At the banquet given to the Australian cricketers nearly 300 guests were present. Sir Henry Barclay presided, and proposed the health of “ Our guests,” Mr Murdoch, the captain of the team, in an enthusiastic speech responded, referring to the success of his team, and concluded by proposing the health of the “ Cricketers of England,” coupled with the names of Messrs Hornby and Thornton. The former gentleman responded, and apolo. gised for the absence of Lord Harris, W. G. Grace, and other well known cricketing gentlemen. Sir Charles DaCane and the Agent-General of Victoria were among those present.
