FIRE IN WELLINGTON

[RHBBO ASSOCIATION THLEGRAH. 1 WELLINGTON, September 26,

A destructive fire broke out iu the rear of Croakery’s (late Crockery and Basel) Auction Mart, Lambton Quay, at ten o’clock to-night. The fire appears to have occurred among some light goods at the back of the store, and spread rapidly. One time it looked as if a very serious conflagration would be the result. Wiggins’ saddlery store, adjoining Crockery’s, on the Southern side, was damaged to the extent of about £SO, and R. Holliday and Co.’s stationer’s shop on the northern side had a narrow escape. The firs was mainly confined to the mart, which is pretty well gutted, but most of the stock was saved. The building occupied by Oroskery is owned by John Duff, and is understood to be insured for about £SCD. The stock is also insured, but the offices are unknown. Wiggins’ loss is covered by insurance in the South British. Holliday is the greatest sufferer, his stock being damaged to a large extent by water. He is insured £2050 in the Transatlantic, Norwich Union, and National offices. The origin of the fire is unknown, no person having been on the premises since six o’clock. The fire brigade were soon on the spot, but there was great delay iu getting water on, several of the couplings going one after the other. Fortunately the wind which had been blowing hard all day died away just before the outbreak, or otherwise several other buildings would have been destroyed. September 27. The correct insurance for last night’s fire at Oroskery Auction Mart (owner, Mr J. Duffy) are £SOO in the Colonial, of which £3OO is reinsured ; stock, £SOO _in the Standard. Holliday’s stock, which was partly damaged, is insured for £2050, distriouted as follows£soo in the Norwich Union, £250 in the Standard, £SOO in the Imperial, £BOO in the Colonial, £650 being reinsured. Wiggins’ saddlery store, which is slightly damaged, is insured for £6OO in the Imperial and £2OO in the National, _ The stock is uninsured. Mr Wiggins estimates his loss at £l5O.
