WELLINGTON, September 24. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon oonoerning the sadden death of an infant named Henrietta McCarthy, aged four weeks. The evidenoe showed that its mother, Catherine McCarthy, had been confined in the Women's Home, and that the child was adopted by a woman named Jansen a short time after birth. The ohild had been fearfully negleoted by Jansen, being left almost without clothing, and for hours without any nourishment. When remonstrated as to her treatment of the child, Jansen replied, " Let the little b—— r cry and die, I'll pay for the funeral." The medical evidenoe showed neglect, but to what extent death was aggravated by this he oould not say. The verdict of death from natural causes was returned. It is understood that the police intend to take further action in the matter. TIMARU, September 24. At the inquest en Alexander Moßratney, found dead at Arowhenua on Friday, a verdiot was returned—'' That ho met his death by a gunshot wound, but whether inflicted accidentally or otherwise there was no evidenoe to show." OAMARU, September 24. A fire took plaoa in a three-roomed house in Eden street on Saturday shortly before midnight. The house was occupied by a man named Alfred Dray. The neighbors were aroused by soreams, and found Mrs Dray, who had only been oon fined a week, rushing into the garden with her cMld in her arms, both enveloped in fUmes. They succeeded in extinguishing the flames by means of wet sheets, but the child is not expeoted to live.
