RAILWAY RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURE.
[fbom ottb oobbhbpondknt.] WELLINGTON, September 22,
It i» noticed with »ome regret that the railways generally are beginning to show some falling off this year aa compared with last year. The returns for the twenty weeks show the mileage receipts as being practically stationary, while the working expenses hare increased by over thirty thousand (£30,000) in that period, absorbing 62 per cent, of the revenue instead of 67 per cent, as last year, Consequently the nett profit for the twenty weeks exhibits a decrease of ten thousand (£1000). Of this falling off, three-fourths is on the Hnrunui-Bluff line, on which the receipts have only increased by £1 16> 5d per mile, while the expenditure has risen £52 2s 3d per mile. On the Auckland Hnee, too, the receipts have diminished by £6 5s 7d per mile, and the expenses are augmented by £3O 18a 2d per mile. On the N-ilson lines the receipts have diminished by £-14 4? per mile, and the expenditure has inoreased from 72 to 77 per cent, on the revenue. On the Wellington line the receipts have increased by £66 11s 6d, and the expenditure has fallen from 80 to 76 per cent. The coal lines are still doing splendidly; The above returns, however, are considered to show that great care will have to be exercised in doing anything which may tend either to lessen the receipts or enlarge the expenditure.
