He left the premises in charge of Alfred King, a , young man In his employ. King was out until one o’clock this morning, wbeu he found . all safe. Being desirous of glueing a joint, , so that it would be cold and hard in the ■ morning, he lighted a fire in the kitchen, whioh (both men being bachelors) was also ' used a* a workshop. A quantity of shavings . was scattered about the floor, and these he used to kindle the fire. After finishing the joint and seeing the fire, as he thought, all right, , he retired to his bedroom in the upper storey, 1 and was soon fast asleep. About three o’clock, however, he was aroused from his slumbers by a slight sensation of suffocation. He immediately discovered the room to be full of smoke. Hastily donning his trousers and coat, he rushed to the staircase, bat ; found that mode of egress in flames from top to bottom. The latter was efficiently worked by members of the Auckland Naval Brigade, who, despite the scorching heat, stuck to their posts manfully, while the Fire Brigade confined the fire to the original block, and protected the adjacent property. There were two gas explosions during the fire, but no one was injured. As the fire has proved the uselessness of the city water supply for firs purposes to the Kyber Pass and upper suburban districts, it is proposed to erect a concrete reservoir on the snmmit of Mount Eden.
