THE ART SOCIETY.
The claims of the Art Society are hardly, we are afraid, sufficiently appreciated by the public. At the late general meeting of the Society this was noted and regretted in the annual report. But the Society does really good and sound work. It fosters a love of the beautiful and artistic in the community, and it raises a spirit of healthy emulation among those who specially cultivate the arts. Its functions do not in any way trench on those of the Art School. Its annual exhibitions are designed to display the advance made year by year in the arte. A contemporary the other day, in writing on the Society, advises it to institute lectures in the various centres of population. We should be sorry to see anything of the kind. That is the function of the Art School. The Society, amongst other things, gauges the advantages gained by the Art School, and is yet independent of it ; but it does not pretend to educate except indirectly. It has no professors, and does not seek any. But it is none the less useful for all that, and we trust that for the future the public will grant it a more hearty support.
