[By Thxbcuuph.] [Per i.i. Arawata, at Buseell.] MELBOUBNE, September 13. Upon the report of the Seleot Committee on the Tramwayi Bill being moved in the Assembly, Bir B. O'Loghlen intimated that he would move a re-oommittal. It ia stated that as the tramways would severely injure the Government railways, it is thought that the Government should participate in their profits. The watoheß sent in parts to evade duty were shipped by the Waltham Company. Steps have been taken to prevent a reourrenoe. The number of prisoners in the gaols or the colony is stated to be 1435. At an influential meeting of the Boman Catholic body it was resolved to proceed with the central tower of St. Patrick*! Cathedral as a memorial of the preservation of Arohbishop Gould. The Barrabool en route to Sydney broke down ofE the Bamhead, and was towed back by the Cheviot, belonging to the lame oompany. At a meeting of the Hospital committee it was announced that subscriptions had fallen off. Thia was said to be due to the wild and insane oonduot of Dr. Youl, the coroner, in stating that the institution was saturated with erysipelas. There was some talk of taking proceedings against the coroner. On Tuesday evening a handsome testimonial, consisting of three massive centre pieces and a half-length portrait in oil, was presented by Members of the Assembly to John Bacher, late clerk. The Speaker made the presentation in very complimentary terms. A telegram hai been received by the Governor from Lord Kimberley relative to an extensive Irish immigration. In the Assembly the question has been brought up and a motion tabled against Irish immigration as undesirable. ADELAIDE, September 14. Sir Thomas Elder has promised £3OOO towards the formation of an Academy of Music in the oolony. The Marine Board held an enquiry into the loss of the Helen White, whioh left Newcastle on May 13th and not since heard of. It appears she was well found in every respect. There were on board the captain, his wife, and ten hands. The vessel was in. sured for £ISOO. SYDNEY, September 14. Sir Henry Parkcs romains at the Colonial Secretary's office unable to be moved. He is still very weak, and it will be some time before he is able to resume publio duties. It is the intention of the Government to bring in a Bill to make better provision for the aborigines of tbo oolony. The Diocesan Synod continued its sitting during the week for the selection of names to be submitted to the Bishops for the final appointment of a Bishop of Sydney. The only result at present is that Canon Fleming's name is one of three from whioh the choice will ultimately be made. The strike of the iron workers has increased. A number of the men have found employment elsewhere, in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Newcastle principally. The Board appointed to enquire into the management of the quarantine station at North Head, found that it was defective, and that grounds existed for the complaints made. A committee has been appointed to make a scleotion of a suitable site for the statue of the late T. S. Mort, shortly expeoted from Italy. Great complaints are made of the dearness of butchers' meat, especially at Newcastle. The threatened oolliery strike at Newcastle has been averted, the district lodges having decided against it. The weather has been warm all over the oolony. PEBTH, September 14. Captain Audley Coote'a proposal to conitruot a railway from the eastern districts to King George's Sound on a guarantee of 3£ per oent, could not be entertained by the Legislature, but another proposal would be | made on the basis of a smaller guarantee, combined vita small land grants.
