The football match between Wanganui and the New South Wales team took place at Greytown this afternoon. The weather watt fine, and the attendance was estimated from 1000 to 1500. The Sydney men were the favorites, 2to 1 being laid on them. In the Sydney team Richmond played in the plaee of Jennings. Bolton acted as umpire for the Wanganui men, and firth for the New South W-.ies team, Ronaldson, who captained the Wellington team on Saturday acting aa referee. Two spells of forty minutes each - were played, and Bnpor, of Sydney, winning the toss selected to defend the eastern goal. At ten minutes past two the Wanganui men kioked off, and drove the ball well down towards their opponents' goal. The forwards followed up well, and were getting close to the Sydney goal, when G. Bayiey picked up the ball, and attempted a goal, but was udbuocessful. Some good passing on the part of the) Wanganui forwards caused the Sydney men to touoh down in self-defence. Scrimmage after scrimmage then took place, the Wanganui men showing to advantage. Baper, the Sydney captain, then made a splendid effort, and was dangerously close to the Wanganni goal before he wss collared. Scrimmage followed, resulting in favor o£ Wanganni. At this juncture Gibbons, who was playing forward, carried the bill well np the field, and again Sydney touched down behind their goal line. Immediately after the ball was kioked out the Wanganui forwards rushed the leather elose to the Sydney goal posts. Here the roughest sorimmago of the day took place, Wanganni endeavoring to obtain a touch behind, while Sydney fought every inch of the ground, bnt eventually wan again obliged to touoh down. The Australians were pasting splendidly, but were unable to get through the Wanganni forwards, who proved themselves adapts at collaring. Harkins and Thallon worked the ball down the field, and, passing it to B&par, he ran close to the Wanganni quarters, and had a drop at tho goal, bnt failed to score. The backs of both teams were now kicking well. The Wanganui men drove the ball np to the Sydney end, from whenoe it was returned by Walker, the " sensational drop" of the Australian team. After a couple of close scrimmages George Bayiey ran behind the Sydney goal and touohed down. The try however was disallowed, as in the excitement a second Wanganni man raa in, and alto touched the ball. The touch was allowed, Wanganui thus scoring two points. Time was then called. Oaring this spell the game was very fast, the Wanganui men playing well together, and keeping the ball for the most part near the Sydney goal line. G. Bayiey, one of the Wanganui half-backs, reoeived a nasty blow on the forehead through colliding with one ot the Sydney men, and had to retire from the field juit before the first spell ended. For tho remainder of the game Wanganni played one man short. At 2,55 Bapsr started the ball rolling for the second spell, and calling upon his forwards the ball was rushed down to the Wanganui end, when Thallon was collared. A elose scrimmage resulted, and gradually Sydney were forced towards their own goal, when Fiigg, by clever dodging, parsed four of his opponents, and handing the ball to Baper, the latter rushed into touch, this being the first score for Sydney men. Thallon tock the kick and soored a goal (five points). The play on both sides was now splendid, and the slightest advantage to either side evoked lond applause. Flipg again distinguished himielf in dodging, and managed to secure another another try for his side. the kiok, which was a very easy one, score, the tall passing low. The ball w*s\ brought out, asd Baylies obtained a mask. Thallon was again entrusted to kick, and made a splendid effort, the ball passing to the right of the goal posts. Wanganni kioked cut ; but were almost immediately forced down, and a few minutes later were placed in a similar position. The Byo"nfy play at this time was perf set, not a chance being lost, and the brilliant manner in whioh they pasted the ball down the field was greeted with cheors. Shortly afterwards Figg ran in and secured a try, and Thallon kicked bnt mulled it, the ball striking the goal post low. After being kioked out, Bsyiio dodged bin wiy close to the Wanganui, when he was caught and passed the ball to Hall, who ran behind, but the try was disallowed on the ground that the ball was thrown after Baylies was held. Five minutes later no side wss called and the game ended, cheers being exchanged. The second spell was marked by the united play of tho Sydney men, and especially that of young Bayliss, who on two or three occasions eucceetfully dodged the whole of the Wanganni men, only being caught when near hi* opponents' goaf: The play on both sides through out the game was good, but the staying powers of the Acriralians towards the end of the last speil told. 4 At 5 30 tho Sydney men left for Ljttelton in the steamer Manapouri-.
