Distbiot Coubt.—The case brought in the above Court by J. E. ThomsoD, a firmer at Carleton, against the Oxford Boad Board laitod till two o'clock this day. Several witnesses wero examined, and the Court presented an unusual appearance, owing to the array of plans of the distriot in question that were furnished for the identification of the locality. The damage sustained was computed at e *-77, it beir>jt alleged that about 25 acres of the plaintiff's land had been rendered useless for coHi cation owing to the Board's action in cutting certain drains that brought large quantities of water on one of his fields, mj Honor reviewed the evidence, and said that as this appeared to be the natural oourse that would be taken by tho water, and the question of a smaller or greater quantity not being one of (he pL-u?, it waa open for P"* 1 *" tiff to teke a notsuit, whioh was accepted by Mr Stricter on his behalf. The Eight Hon. Sib Ghobgb Gbet, Babt.—A telegram elsewhere announces the death of this illustrious statesman at the ripe old age of eighty-three. Bduoatod 8* Oriel College, Oxford, he was oilled to the Bar in 1826, and returned to the House of Goramons as member for Devonport in 1832, whioh he continued to represent till 1847. In 1834 he held for a short period the position of Under- Secretary for the Colonies, and in the succeeding year and until 1839 held the •ame post under Lord Melbourne, when he was made Judge-Advocate. In 1841 he made an exohange of this situation for that of the Chancellorship of the Duchy of Lancaster. In 1846, on the formation of Lord Busjcll'e first administration, he was appointed Secretary of State for the Home Department, in whioh capacity during the great commotions of 1848 he won golden opinions from all parties for his prudence and rigor in the maintenance of order. The eeals of tbe Colonial Office were offered and accepted by him in 1854, and in the following year, during Lord Palaaerston's first administration, be retnrned to the Home Office, and in 1659 again was Ohanoellor of the Duohy of Lancaster, finally seeking the Home Offioe again in 1861, which he held till 1866, when he retired with the Bussell Administration. He was created a GOB, in 1849, and on the dissolution of Parliament in 1874 he retired from public life. St Albans Council.—Mr W. S.
