THE DISTRESS IN ICELAND.

To the Hditor of the Globe. Sib, —To all who are proud of belonging to the Anglo-?axon raoe the news of the distress now prevailing among their Teutonic kinsmen iu Iceland, owing to measles and famine, must have given the deepest pain No political economist will wonder at the existence of famine in Iceland, where the population is dense, and the food producti scanty. The Icelanders are industrious and well educated ; they are good sailors, good shepherds, good fishermen ; and they are remarkably quick ia learning the English language, which is cognate with their own, but their island is manifestly too small {9: them. Is there not room for a detachment of them in New Zaaland ? And would not the present he a suitable occasion to invite them, if not to offer to assist them, to emigrate hither ! Ihelr long wlnt< r will soon be beginning. If famine is prevalent uow, what will their condition be during the winter when communication by ship with the continent of Europe almost entirely ceases ? Will not the Government o! New Zealand telegraph an invitation to the looal government in Iceland, or to their home government in Denmark, inviting the Icelanders to aeni a colony of strong young men and women forthwith to New Zealand, where there will surely be m difficulty in ficdlng employment for them? I believe a telegraphic cable is n w at wo k between the north of Scotland and Iceland. Tours, &c, A SYMPATHISING TEUTON. Christchuroh, September 19th.
