SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this body waa held last evening at 7 o'olook. Present— His Worship the Mayor, Ors. Langdown, Andrews, Hall, Brown, Forrester and Pavitt. Mr O. Allison, returning officer, reported the result of the recent municipal elections. Mr T. Gordon, sooretary to the Drainage Board, forwarded copies of the resolutions passed at the late conference of the locil bodies on health matters, whioh were referred to the sanitary committee. A letter from the Railway Engineer's Dapartment was next read, whioh stated that the proposed improvements to the Durham street railway crossing would be carried out by the department if the Borough waa willing to bear the cost of the work and keep the lamps fed and lighted. A telegram was also read in this connection from the M.H.B. for Sydenham, to the effeot that the petition re the orossing had not been received in Wellington. At this stage a deputation interviewed the Counoil on the matter, and were informed that the works and lighting committees would attend to it without delay. Mr White, M.H..8., telegraphed that the clause in the Special Powers and Contraots Bill referring to the Sydenham reserve had been struck out, but reinserted at his in stance. The thanks of the Counoil were unanimously accorded to him for his action. A latter from the secretary of the Sydenham Cricket Club, re a cricket ground, was referred to the works oommittee.
Mr J. Woodborough, junior, clerk to the Council, wrote tendering his resignation, which was accepted with regret, and the Town Clerk was instructed to advertise for his successor.
The works oommittee reported—That the streets in 8.8. No. 235 had been properly constructed, and the oommittee advised that they be taken over as public streets. That the committee had conferred with a deputation of the Heathoote Road Board re the proposed alterations to Wilson's road, but that a difference had arisen as to the width of the footpaths, and that the committee did not consider it expedient to alter its plans. That they consider the letter from the Drainage Board contraotor re the repairs of the bydenham streets after laying drain ppei, un«ati»faotory, and, as idvised by the Council's foreman of works, without foundation. That the consideration of the Jackson's O eek nuissnoe be deferred till the election of the new woria oommittee. That the works committee consider the appointment of a medical man to visit the Borough School, with a view to prevent the spread of oonI tagious diseases, pertains to the school commiitee.
The report was reeeivcd and adopted. The finai.ca committee reported for the past fortnight as follows:—Receipts, £378 10s lOd ; expenditure, £302 7s 9d j credit balance at Bank, £984 6s Id. The report was adopted. The question of the formation of Gordon sir set was referred to the works and finance oommittee for inquiry. On the motion of Or. Andrew, soconded by Or. Lang down, the following matter was referred to the fire prevention oommittee — "That Mr Harris, superintendent of the Christohuroh Fire Brigade, having kindly
offered to supervise a local fire brigade, this Council is of opinion that tho burgesses should at once take the neoessary steps to organise a hook and ladder brigade instead of a fire brigade for Sydenham." The thanks of the Oounoil was also acoorded to the Ohtistchureh Fire Brigade for its prompt action at the reoent fire in Sydenham, by whioh the next house was prevented oatohing fire. The Mayor reported that the school committee hai determined to appoint two gentlemen to aot with the oommittoe of this Coumoil re a swimming bath far the Sydenham school, and would interview the Board of Bduoation on tho matter at its next meeting i also that plans for the bath were in course of preparation by Or. Andrews. Acknowledgments of receipt of the resolution paessd at the recent meeting in Syden ham re the Northern Bailway Extension were read from Messrs Bolleeton, Thomson, Holmes, and White, M.H.B.'s, as also from the clerk to the Ashley Boad Board. It was agreed to fix a lamp at the corner of Bowea and Durham streets, near Lho site of the Baptist Ohurob. Mr White, M.H.8., telegraphed that, in company with Sir John Hall and Mr B. G. Wright, he had interviewed the Minister for Pablio Works, who had promised that a survey of tho proposed West Coast line of railway should be made during the ensuing lummer.
It was resolved—" That the thanks of the Counoil be oonveyed to Mr E. G. Wright, M.H, 8., for his successful action in getting Sydenham represented on the Lyttelton Harbor Board."
Or. Brown then rose and expressed regret that they were about to loae two Councillors who had been with them from the commencement. He referred to Crs. Langdown and Hall. He would propose "That the thanka of this Oounoil be presented to Messrs Langdown and Hall, the retiring Councillors, for their valuable services rendered to the borough as members of the Counoil, and that the Oounoil regrets losing suoh valuable services, and hopes, at no distant period, tbeir valuable help will be again available to the Oounoil," Or. Andrew seconded the resolution, to which each of the Councillors spoke in support, the Mayor also concurring. The retiring Councillors responded in suitable terms. This wss all the business.
