LICENCING COMMITTEES.
AVON. The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Committee for the Avon district was held at noon this day. Present —Messrs B. J. 8. Harman (ohairman), B. Weatenra, H. J. Hall, Joseph Bailey, and W. H. Lane. BXTBNSION OB HOtTSS. Mr Maude applied on behalf of Mr J. A. Hansmann, Feathers' Hotel, .Linooln road, for an extension of hours from ten o'olock till midnight. Mr Maude justified the application on the ground that many men were employed in the Addington sheds, particularly in the grain season, till a late hour; also, that ofteniimas men were employed after ten o'olook in the Addington workshops, and further, that a petition had been numerously signed by near residents and others in favor of the The home had been well conducted during the five years that Mr Hansmann had been the lessee. He would also mention that every attention had been paid by the licensee to provide every facility for esoape in case of fire ; that, in addition to two staircases in different parts of the house, three ladders were always kept in olose proximity to the hotel, and he hoped that the limit allowed by the Aot would be extended in this instance. Mr Hansmann was then examined, and corroborated what had been urged by Mr Maude, staling further that his trade had suffered in oonsequence of closing at ten o'olock, and that he had oftentimes to sit up till midnight to admit his lodgers. Mr Maude congratulated the Committee that the Aot was likely to be so amended as to give disoretionaiy powers as to the dosing hour. He was quite sure that all hotel keepers would gladly hail a return to the eleven o'clock dosing hour. The Chairman feared that the amended Aot would not empower the Committees to grant licenses till eleven o'olook. Carnelius Dyer, lessee of the Biocarton Hotel, near Hagley Park, made a similar application, on the ground that many persons driving oattle and sheep from long distances often required refreshment at late hours. The Committee pointed out that such persons were bona fide travellers. The police gave all the licensees in the district an exoellent charaoter. The Committee returned to consider the applications, and on resuming announoed that both applications would be refused. KAIAPOI. At the adjourned Kaiapoi licensing meeting this day, all the Committee were present, Mr Hurse presiding. Messrs Wearing, Burn'p, and Patman applied for midnight licenses. Bev. B. McGregor, Presbyterian, presented a memorial for an adjournment to allow petitions for or against, to be presented in fourteen days. The Ohairman announoed the Committee would adjourn till the 25 b, as a had been received stating that probably the Licensing Aot Amendment Bill would be passed giving Committees power to grant eleven o'olook licenses. The Committee decided that midnight was too late. No reason beiDg assigned for the absence of the clerk, it was deoided to recommend the appointment of the Town Clerk.
