HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
A n ordinary meeting of the Hospital and Onaritable Aid Board was held at 4 p.m. yesterday. Present —The Mayor of Christchurch (in the chair), Drs. Pi ini and Turnbull, and Mr J. G. Hawkes.
The Mayor of Sydenham tent an apology for non-attendance.
Tha Hospital committee departed that during the fortnight ending September 2nd twenty-seven patients were admitted into the Hospital, and twenty-five discharged, leaving fifty-eight patients in the institution. During the same period there were three death*. For the corresponding period of last year the number of patients was seventy-three. f Tha Colonial Secretary wrote, enclosing e. letter received from Mr J. M. Heywood respecting certain Hospital charges being remitted to a lata Hospital patient, and suggesting that an annuity be granted to the man in question, who is stated as being sixtynine years of age, and asking for a report ae to the man's condition.
It was agreed that payment should not be pressed for, and that the secretary make further inquiries. Dr Turnbull then moved—“ That it would contribute to the efficiency of the Hospital if a physician for the discuses of women and children were appointed." For a considerable period he hud occupied this position. He thought the appointment was as important as any other, and it would not deter from tha usefulness of the other members of the staff. It was once in being, and it was for many reasons most desirable that snch an appointment be made. Many outdoor patients could thus be treated, and, farther, it would entail no expense. Dr. Prins seconded the motion. The Chairman was of opinion that ths stiff should be consulted. The resolution was carried on the understanding that *he staff be consulted on the matter.
Tho returns for the Akaroa Hospital showed there were two patients in that instituticn.
The Casual Ward, Lyttelton, was reported as having one patient. The Orphanage ropoit stated that no admissions had tikfu place in August, that two boys had been withdrawn by their mother, and that at present there are fortysix boys and thirty-six girls in that institution.
The Orphanage committee reported having gore carefully through the applications for the offices of master and matron to the Orphanage, and recommended that Mr and Mrs T. H. Eitchio, cf Otaio, t« appointed. On iho motion of Dr. Irins, seconded by Dr. Turnbull, the committee’s recommendation was adopted. The master of the Ashburton Home reported the number of inmates to be thirtynine, that the additions to the Home are nearly completed, and asking for the requisite bedding, &0., therefor.
j'.he necessary instructions were given. It was agreed that the consideration of repairs. Ac., to the Armagh street Home be deferred. Alter tho consideration of some Charitable Aid oases tin Board adjourned.
